A Short Paper Assignment allows you, early in the course, to demonstrate your research skills to your instructor and to receive feedback that will benefit you when you write your research paper. With this assignment, you will learn how to do proper and adequate research and write a short paper and prepare you for writing the research paper.
This short paper is at least three double-spaced pages of text (Times New Roman, font size 12) and you must consult a minimum of two academically credible sources. Bibliographies and citations will be in the Chicago Manual of Style format.
The short paper needs to be turned in through the assignment section for grading. If you use any of the information from your sources word-for-word, you must cite the source by using endnotes or footnotes. If you read the information and write it in your own words and it is not common knowledge, then you must cite the source because you are paraphrasing someone's information.
The short paper must be a minimum of three pages, include a cover page with your name, course number and course title, instructor's name, and date. You must also include a reference page at the end of your paper and you must cite your work within the content of the paper. While composing your paper, use proper English. Do not use abbreviations, contractions, passive voice, or first/ second person (I, you, we, our, etc). Before submitting your paper, check your grammar and use spell check. Remember, the way you talk is not the way you write a paper. Please label your paper as follows: lastnamefirstnameHIST222ShortPaper.
Welcome to Hollywood. You are a fledging movie writer and you are about to “pitch” your idea for a historical film. Tell the movie executive (me) about your idea. You must pick a subject that we have covered in this class and describe the best way to adapt it into a screenplay. Why is this movie important? When is the movie taking place? Who would play each part and why?
You must use at least two citations from academic journals, articles, newspapers and/or books .
Here is what I will be looking for and grading on…

Most importantly did you choose a suitable subject? Is this something we covered in class or is in the text book…if not, it is an AUTOMATIC D. (Basically this has to be from our era NOT the first half of this sequence HIST221.)

Did you use your sources, our class material and the readings to understand the subject matter and propose your film? This separates you from any other schmo off the street, it gives you credibility and I will be looking for specific understanding of the historical content. This is how you set the film up and propose suitable ideas for the film’s layout and actors, etc.

BE CREATIVE! Who are you? Set the scene and have some fun. Where will you shoot your movie, and why? Who will play the major roles in this film? What actors and actresses will you pursue to make this movie successful, and why did you choose these individuals.

You may write this essay as a formal essay or as a dialogue.
