What  Is  a  Case?  

•  It’s  simply  a  story  about  a  company  and  the   strategic  issues  facing  it’s  strategic  decision   makers.  

•  Based  on  your  analysis,  you  should  idenFfy   the  major  strategic  issues  and  formulate  the   strategic  alternaFves  that  would  best  address   those  issues

•  External  Analysis   – A  descripFon  of  the  opportuniFes  and  threats   found  in  the  specific  and  general  external   environmental  sectors.  

•  Internal  Analysis   – A  descripFon  of  the  strengths  and  weaknesses   found  in  the  organizaFon’s  internal  funcFonal   areas

•  Strategic  Issues   –  IdenFfy  the  criFcal  strategic  issues.  Typically  these  are   criFcal  weakness,  opportuniFes,  or  possibly  threats.  

•  Strategic  AlternaFves   –  What  is  the  strategic  alternaFve  being  proposed?   –  How  will  the  alternaFve  be  done?   –  Who  will  be  responsible?   –  When  will  the  alternaFve  need  to  be  done?   –  Where  will  the  alternaFve  need  to  be  done?

•  RecommendaFons   – Which  alternaFves  are  you  choosing  and  why?   – Which  alternaFves  are  you  rejecFng  and  why?

Finding  InformaFon  To  Do  a  Case   Analysis  

•  Start  with  the  case  itself   – Read  through  the  case  iniFally  to  familiarize   yourself  with  the  company  and  the  situaFon.  

– Go  back  and  note  certain  statements  and  whether   they  describe  internal  or  external  factors.  

•  If  your  professor  allows   – Look  at  sources  like  company  Web  pages,   governmental  Web  sites,  company  and  industry   news  and  general  business  periodicals
