Assignment 2 – Port scanning

Submission: When: See blackboard! (fixed deadline, late submission results in -2pts) How: Please upload your result to Blackboard (no E-Mail!). What: one PDF-file (details see Syllabus). Description: Use a port-scanner and scan 1-2 websites on the Internet.

- Do not scan Google, Newhaven.edu and Facebook. - Describe at least 8 different ports.

If the port scanner provides an “extensive” scan (e.g., scanning for the operation system), use this mode. Make a screenshot of your result and describe / summarize the output, e.g., what are the open ports, why are they needed on this server, … . Most popular scanner is nmap (available for Windows/Mac/Linux). However, you are allowed to use any scanner you want. Grading: It is possible to obtain up to 10 points (rough overview):

10 - clearly exceptional; went far beyond expectations in amount and/or quality of work 8 - very good; exceeded some requirements of the assignment 6 - good; met all expectations for assignment 4 - fair; missed some requirements 2 - poor; missed most or all requirements 0 - fail; work was unacceptable or not submitted in time

Your final points are based on the following criteria:

Remark: An assignment is individual work (no teamwork!) and thus you are supposed to work on your own. If you copy and paste text from the Internet, it must be quoted.
