How to Upgrade Memory on a Dell Laptop

i. Check whether your laptop need additional RAM
By opening the Windows Task Manager’s performance tab, you can check the amount of memory that is in use out of available memory. In this tab you will also see the number of memory slots in use and the number of slots that are vacant for addition of memory.
ii. Select the appropriate memory
After coming to a conclusion that you need to have some additional RAM, the next step is to select the correct memory.
The best way of selecting what your laptop needs so as to select compatible upgrades is by is to scan the system.
iii. Dissemble the laptop bottom panel to locate the memory slots.
With the memory to be added near you, turn off the laptop and ensure you have unplugged the power supply adapter.
Open the panel on the bottom of the laptop which covers the memory chips.
iv. Discharge your body
Before you lower your hand on any of the inside parts of the laptop, touch any metallic surface to discharge your body of any static charges that might damage the memory chips.
v. Remove the Memory chips from the upper slots
If the already installed memory occupies the upper slots, remove them or it in case it is one and put it in the other lower slots to have space for additional RAM.

To remove the memory module, push apart the clips holding it in place. The memory module should come up slanted and then by holding the memory chip by its ends taking care not to touch the shiny golden connectors located at the back part, take the chip out.
vi. Insert the old memory chip in lower space or slot
Install the chip into the lower space at an angle of about 45o with the golden edge facing down. Push it into place with your finger until you hear come click sound and have the feel that the chip has snapped to its place.
vii. Insert the new Memory chip in the upper space or memory slot.
Install the new memory following the procedure in the previous point.
The last step is powering your machine, put it on, open the task manager, then navigate to the performance tab and confirm that your additional memory has been successfully added.
