Description:
You will prepare and submit a term paper on a topic of your choice. This term paper gives you an opportunity to personalize the concepts you are learning in this course. It should be about 15 pages in length. You need to submit the final term paper outline.
Term Paper Topic (1-2 pages APA)
For now, you are required to choose a suitable topic for your term paper. The topic must be related to business communication. It may, for example, be an application of the course concepts to your work situation. It may be a research paper with a survey/questionnaire to investigate a concept of interest. You may consider other options as well. Your choice must be approved by the instructor.
Term Paper Outline (1-2 pages APA)
For now, you are required to submit an outline for your final term paper based on the topic you have chosen. Your outline should include the following criteria:
1. Main topic headings
2. Appropriate sub-headings (2-4 sub-headings are suggested).
Your outline may be modified to suit your topic. Ensure that your choices of headings and subheadings are appropriate, given the literature that is available on your chosen subject. Your outline is likely to be modified by discoveries from additional research on your topic as you go through this course.
Include at least one appropriate reference for each main section of your paper. References must be primarily concerned with your specific topic and should not simply report on the topic as part of its introduction or discussion. Include a Reference page in APA format.
Term Paper (15 pages APA)
You are strongly encouraged to use the following outline in your term project report:
Title: The title is a concise statement of the subject of the paper.
Abstract: The abstract is an "executive overview" of your paper. It should summarize the work in 50 to 100 words and enable your manager grasp the essence of your project.
Table of Contents: The table of contents lists each section of your paper and its corresponding page number. The list should include:
1. Tables and Figures (in case you have more than two)
2. Appendices (if there are any)
3. A reference section listing the sources used
Introduction: The introduction should state the purpose of the paper in succinct, declarative sentences. Convince your reader that the study will have practical value and meaning for you and it will be based on the concepts studied in the course.
Background and Significance: The background and significance section provides further justification for your study. If your project examines a topic drawn from your workplace, you should include a description of your work environment, your position in the organization, and how your position fits into the organization, both vertically and horizontally. You should also explain the applicable concepts from the course. If your project is focused on a particular organization, explain how these concepts apply to that organization. What is the organization doing well in? Could it benefit by adopting some of the concepts that you have studied?
Discussion, Implications, and Recommendations: In this section, you should provide a thorough discussion of your findings and the implications of your study. Be sure to include only the pertinent implications. You should also recommend an action plan. This plan will vary depending upon the type of project you have selected. For example, the action plan may be personal, or one which you could follow in your present position. It can also be about a position which would enable you to put the plan into action. If your project is a literature review, then your recommendations may be focused on the issues that need further research. Be sure that the recommendations are realistic in terms of the appropriate concepts and, if applicable, the organization you have studied.
References: You cannot use your textbook as your primary source of information. You must draw on other sources such as websites, business journals, organizations, and interviews with individuals. Be sure that you support the information presented with appropriate references. It is important that all references and quotes are cited correctly. All sources, including websites must be referenced in the Bibliography or References list. You must follow APA guidelines for style and form.
Appendices: Include a separate sheet and title for each appendix.
More Key Points: Keep in mind that all accepted rules of English composition apply to your term paper. Your work should be submitted in a Word document, 15 pages in length, typed in double-space, in 10- or 12-point Arial or Times New Roman font. The page margins on the top, bottom, left side, and right side should be 1 inch each. Remember, the length of the paper is not the primary measure of the quality of the paper.
Midterm Case Study (*I don’t have the details for this paper yet, this is all I have):
A case study is a short description of a real business situation. Analyzing case studies gives you the opportunity to apply those concepts to real business problems. Cases are generally written for several types of analysis. Usually, there is not a “right or wrong"” answer. Rather, cases provide a vehicle for you to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply course concepts. You must use appropriate sources (properly cited) to support your position. Check your analysis by assessing how well it demonstrates your management knowledge. If your answer relies on your impressions of management prior to taking this course, it is likely that the analysis is not your best effort.
Simply answering the questions which are part of the case is not enough; Consider the questions to be clues to the important concepts and facts. You are strongly encouraged to use the following outline so that your analysis is organized appropriately:
Identify both the key issues and the underlying issues. In identifying the issues, you should be able to connect them to the principles which apply to this situation.
Discuss the facts which affect these issues. The case may have too much information. In your discussion, you should filter the information and discuss those facts which are pertinent to the issues identified above.
Discuss your tentative solution to the problem and how you would implement your solution. What actions would you propose to correct the situation, based on the knowledge you have gained in this course? Be sure to support your recommendation by citing references in the text and in the supplementary readings. You should also draw on other references such as business periodicals and journals. Remember that an ANALYSIS is more than simply a SUMMARY of the Case Study.
Discuss follow-up and contingency plans. How will the organization know that your proposed solution is working? What should they do if it does not work?
