My S.M.A.R.T. professional goals include being a transformative leader in the business world. I want to keep followers motivated, inspired, and full of morale which will encourage them to be driven by change while being purposeful. I will lead by example not allowing personal interests to override organizational goals by endeavoring to keep values that steer me and the organization towards set goals. I will encourage followers to make contributions by giving ideas, perspectives and perceptions on a matter and have an inclusive decision-making process where issues will be broadly analyzed and weighed. I will encourage the development of a shared and collective organizational consciousness by being proactive and has vision towards which they focus and lead the organization.
Goal setting is important as it makes one to focus by offering a sense of direction. It also creates an opportunity to anticipate challenges and risks that attain certain goals may pose along the way so we are prepared on how to handle them before hand. With goals we are not easily distracted as we know what we want. Goals motivate us to be more active and undertake actions that will lead to their realization. My S.M.A.R.T goals will help me because I will not procrastinate on what needs to be done. They will motivate me to use my resources including time efficiently by bringing more focus on my undertakings. I will achieve them by surrounding myself with people who have goals in life so that I do not get distracted. Seeing other people focus and attain their goals will motivate me to keep pushing. I will also ensure I keep updates on changes in the leadership world. I will seek as much knowledge on leadership through online research, conferences and simulation programs.
Planning is important as it gives a sense of direction and more so it gives a course of action. Goal setting makes it easier to attain them as we know what we want and within what time frame. Goal setting is important in planning as it outlines workable steps that have meaning to us. Goal setting is a motivation for us to implement the plans we have so as to succeed. Setting goals needs a plan so that the goals can be realized.

How this goal is specific: This goal is specific as it does not only point out that I want to be a leader but it emphasizes on being a transformational leader. This leadership style has been preferred by many especially in the 21st century where people are more civilized and want to develop a sense of ownership. It has also been preferred due to the increased competition with leaders needed to go out of their way to ensure their team’s output is at maximum capacity. |
How this goal is measurable: This goal is measureable by the output I can get with a team. If I can foster the spirit of a team rather than a group at my workplace I am bound to become a good leader. With team work the productivity will increase which will reflect positively on performance-a measure of effective leadership. |
How this goal is achievable: This goal is achievable by employing the right attitude in today’s workplace. Embracing diversity and viewing it as an opportunity rather than a challenge, applying emotional intelligence, being inclusive and consultative while being autonomous and emphasizing on principles will make it attainable. |
How this goal is realistic: This goal is realistic as leaders are made and as long as one in a leadership position places the organizational goals before personal interest and adjust their attitudes, they are bound to be leaders who can influence their followers without coercion. |
How this goal is timed: Developing these skills requires a lot of adjustments, learning and experience as I interact with different people. It also requires me to start at the bottom so that I learn the value people attach to their work at each level. When I am at the top it will be easier to appreciate other’s roles in running the organization. I give myself a time frame of 12 years in the long run to be ready to take up such a role with short term goals of 2 years where I will ensure I will perfect at least 3 characteristic needed for the long run. |
