Services offered Alabama State Department of Professional Regulation
This department offers services such as setting internal guidelines that stakeholders in each professional must follow in order to be recognized and licensed to operate and work in the state. It also enforces guidelines put in place by the national and international bodies depending on each profession. It also offers guides on how and where to go to complete several processes such as recommending schools. It outlines steps through which each professional has to go so that they get a license.
Identify potential profession of interest and discuss the education, licensure and license renewal requirements.
Psychology is a profession that interests me. To get a license one has to have a Bachelors of Science and Masters in psychology from an accredited institution. After this one can chose an area to specialize in and get a PHD. One has to go for a supervised internship, pass at least two exams from Alabama psychology licensing board after which they can apply for a license to practice. For license to be renewed one must submit documents showing continuing education through mail and pay a renewal fees which cannot be made through a credit card. The renewal has to be done before or 15th October of each year failure to which one cannot practice until it is renewed unless very special exempting circumstances exists.
Why do you think it is necessary to have professions in psychology regulated and licensed? Did your exploration change your interest in his particular profession?
I think that in the recent past psychological wellbeing has gained more importance and significance in the health sector. We are seeing conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, and stress not only increase but also get the attention of many people. Psychological health is delicate and the treatment process greatly impacts the lives of the patients after therapy thus regulation and licensing is a precaution to ensure that people get help from professionals with the ability to offer the quality of services they expect. My exploration did change how I viewed psychology as a discipline. I had pictured it as a subordinate of medical practices but the vigorosity of the licensing process gave a perspective that psychology is just as prestigious, demanding and respectable as any other career concerning human well-being. My interest in this profession was reaffirmed.
