Course Outline

image1.pngWhat this course is about....

The purpose of this class is to provide an opportunity for the student to learn how sociologists and other researchers analyze data they collect in conducting research. This course is designed to introduce techniques used to analyze quantitative research data. Emphasis will be placed on the basic concepts of quantitative analysis including models used to explore causality, an introduction to multivariate analysis, and the use of statistical software. The course will focus on understanding, applying, and interpreting statistical techniques, rather on the derivations of methods or performance of calculations.

This course is viewed as a course in data analysis, not a course in statistics, per se. It is an applied course with special attention on the use of statistical software, SPSS in particular, in analyzing research data. Emphasis is placed on the selection of appropriate statistical procedures in the analysis of research data, and the interpretation of the results of the subsequent analyses.

The course provides an introduction to the use of statistical methods from the points of views of both consumers and producers of statistics. The course requires no prior experience with statistics, advanced mathematics, or computing.

At the end of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Understand the reasoning by researchers used statistics in conducting research.

2. Carry out commonly used univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical procedures utilizing SPSS.

3. Interpret and make sense of statistical information reported in newspapers and magazines.

4. Become both a user and a consumer of basic statistical techniques that are commonly used in contemporary research in the social and behavioral sciences.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of the following:

· Distinction between descriptive and inferential statistics and their applications.

· Goals and logic of statistical inference and hypothesis testing

· The basic procedures for developing a research question, selecting procedures and carrying out a research project.

· Application of appropriate statistical techniques to basic and applied research in sociology and related disciplines.

6. Interpret statistical results involving univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical analysis.

7. Write a research report presenting the results of typical statistical analyses performed in social and behavioral research.

What you will be expected to do ...

You are expected to do the following:

· Students are expected to become familiar with elementary statistical procedures and concepts that are used in the analysis of research data.

· Attend and actively participate in all classes the entire duration of the class period. If you are uncomfortable about speaking in public, you will be given other opportunities to participate. For example, you can meet with me outside of class to talk. You can e‑mail me your thoughts and reactions and I will try to integrate them into the course.

· Answer all the items listed in the syllabus before their scheduled class discussion date and come to class prepared to discuss them. You should come to class prepared to discuss the items, make inquiry regarding any ambiguity, and respond to questions that are asked regarding them.

· Show respect for everyone in the classroom. You don't have to agree with everything your classmates or instructor says, but you are expected to be respectful at all times.

· Take detailed notes while in class. At times modifications will be made to the definitions of concepts in the textbook. Moreover, often information will be presented that is not in the textbook. Each student is responsible to take good notes, and ask questions about anything that is unclear.

· Re-write and study your notes before the next class session. A good study technique is to re-write notes taken in class, add information from the textbook, and read these revised notes at least two times before coming to class and at least five times before taking the examination that covers them.

· Obtain notes from other students if you happen to miss a class. Absence from class, regardless of the reasons, is not an excuse for not being prepared to discuss the assigned topics.

· Let me and the Dean for Special Student Services know if you need special American Disabilities Act (ADA) considerations.

· Complete all assignments in a timely manner.

· Each student is expected to participate in a campus survey. The questionnaire used in this survey will be prepared by students in the Sociological Methods class. Each student in this class is expected to obtain thirty (30) completed questionnaires, and key the data collected into SPSS. The data collected by all students will be combined and used to write a research paper for the class. The student is expected to use one of the questions in the questionnaire as a dependent variable, select relevant independent variables, conduct an analysis of the relationships among the variables selected, and write a report describing the methodology, findings, conclusion, and implications of the research. Examples of the type of research report expected are articles published in professional journals reporting the results of research, such as, the American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, Social Problems, etc. Specific tasks are the following:

· Select students via the class sampling procedures and secure the target number of completed questionnaires

· Key the data collected into SPSS

· Analyze the data using statistical procedures in SPSS testing one’s hypotheses.

· Write a report of procedures used and findings of one’s study

The research report should have the following sections:

Cover page: Title (should be a KISS-ME title), author, course title, date.

Introduction: This should be a brief description (two paragraphs) of the background of the research problem.

Research Problem: This section should include description of the following:

Statement of the problem (one sentence)

Nature of the problem (one to two paragraphs providing additional details about problem)

Significance of the problem (two paragraphs, focusing on practical significance and scientific significance of the problem)

Hypothesis and Theory: This section should include description of the following:

Hypothesis (one sentence)

Justification for the hypothesis (two paragraphs)

Analytical model (Figure 1)

Description of one’s analytical model (one paragraph)

Methodology: This section should include description of the following:

Research design employed (one paragraph)

Detailed description of the research design employed and its advantages and disadvantages

Selection of the study participants design (one paragraph)

Detailed description of how study participants were selected and the advantages and disadvantages of the procedures used

Data collection design (three to four paragraphs)

Detailed description of the procedures and instrument used in collecting the data. Questionnaire items used must be described verbatim. The advantages and disadvantages of the procedures used must be described.

Data analysis design (two paragraphs)

Detailed description of the statistical procedures used in analyzing the data.

Findings: This section should include description of the following:

Univariate analysis: (one page)

Table 1, Frequency and percentage distribution of your dependent variable)

Bivariate analyses: (two pages)

Table 2, Percentage distribution of the dependent variable by your key independent variable

Results of chi square test

Results of independent samples t-test

Results of ANOVA (Table 3)

Table 4, Matrix of correlation of variables in your analytical model

Multivariate analysis: (one page)

Table 5, Results of the regression of your dependent variable on a regression model consisting of all of the independent variables in your analytical model

Extra credit options:

Partial correlation of DV and key IV controlling for antecedent IVs and intervening IVs

Two-way ANOVA

Stepwise multiple regression analysis

Discussion: This section should include description of the relationship between your hypothesis and your findings (two to four paragraphs)

Conclusion: This section should include a concluding statement for your study (one sentence)

What you will be expected not to do...

· Turn on cell phones while in class. Class participation points will be subtracted from each student using a cell phone while in class.

· Have private conversations while in class. Class participation points will be subtracted from each student engaging in private conversation with other students regardless what is the purpose of the conversation.

· Disrupt the class by text-messaging, listing to music, chatting with your neighbor, or surfing the Internet. Such behavior will result in a loss of class participation points.

· Communicate with anyone except the instructor during an examination. This means persons sitting next to you for any purpose. Any conversation will result in a grade of “0” for the exam.

· Leave the classroom for any purpose during the exam. If you have a medical condition that requires you to use the restroom, you must have a letter from a doctor indicating such a need. Simply getting up and walking out of the classroom is not tolerated.

· Violate the Academic Code of Student Conduct:

Academic cheating (any intentional act(s) of dishonesty in the fulfillment of academic course or program requirements. This offense shall include (but is not limited to) utilization of the assistance of any additional individual(s), organization, document, or other aid not specifically and expressly authorized by the instructor or department involved. (Note: This infraction assumes that with the exception of authorized group assignments or group take-home assignments, all course or program assignments shall be completed by an individual student only without any consultation or collaboration with any other individual, organization, or aid.).

Plagiarism (to take and pass off intentionally as one's own the ideas, writings, etc. of another without attribution (without acknowledging the author). To clarify, here are some examples of plagiarism:

· Copying essays or papers from friends

· Copying paragraphs or sentences out of books

· Cutting and pasting paragraphs, sentences from the Internet

· Downloading or purchasing papers off of the Internet

Penalties. The minimum disciplinary penalty imposed upon a student found to have committed an infraction(s) of this Code shall be no credit for the course assignment or examination in which the infraction(s) occurred; however, a more severe penalty, such as failure in the course involved or suspension from the University, may be imposed depending upon the nature and extent of the infraction(s).

How will your final grade be computed...

The final grade will be computed as follows:

All examinations are comprehensive examinations. Examinations will cover all handouts, lectures, and assignments. Typical examination questions are listed throughout this syllabus. Typically, once exams are graded, they are returned to students two weeks after the exam.

No make-up exams will be given irrespective of the reason for missing an exam. If one misses an examination for any reason whatsoever, one’s exam grade will be a zero. All students will have the option to drop the lower grade of the first two exams and count the final exam 40 percent of their final grade.

Several pop quizzes will be given throughout the semester. They may be given at the beginning of a class, at the end of a class, or both; and may be oral or in writing. Pop quizzes may cover any topic discussed in class at any time during the semester.

Extra credit:

One also has the option to incorporate additional statistical procedures in one’s research paper that are not required to be included. Such statistical procedures include the following:

· Two-way analysis of variance

· Partial correlation

· Stepwise regression analysis

· Univariate and bivariate and graphs

These procedures will be reviewed at the end of the semester. They are described in Pallant (2013) SPSS Survival Manual: A Step by Step Guide to Data Analysis Using IBM SPSS, and many other statistics textbooks.
