Purpose

This is a short report which aims at examining the history, and the current situation of the College Settlement, which is located over 60 acres in Horsham Township.

Findings

History

Founding and Venue

The College Settlement was founded in the year 1892 for the purpose of providing cultural, social as well as educational programs for the immigrants of the South Philadelphia. At that time, the Agency carried out its business at a Settlement House at Christian and Fourth Streets in Philadelphia. In the year 1922, Anna Freeman Davies founded the College Settlement Camp to mainly supplement the educational, cultural as well as recreational programs within the city by The College Settlement of the Philadelphian. Since that year, The College Settlement Camp has majored in providing the locals, which are Philadelphian people with camping services. These camping services range from weekend camping to dynamic summer program by the community groups and the scouts. The College Settlement of Philadelphia also has overnight camp programs for the children age 8 to 14 years while the Kuhn Day Camp offers famous day camp programs for children of age 7 to 12 years. These programs are mainly for the children with financial drawbacks from the cosmopolitan of Philadelphia area. Most of these kids face difficult situations and encounter challenging problems in their daily lives. They mainly offer them educational and enjoyable summer experience. They do so use outdoor staff that is trained to offer these services to children (figure 1).

The outdoor services aim at complementing the school curriculum more so Sciences and offering experienced based teachings which boost the abilities of the students to understand their normal class topics. It ensures that the syllabus of the class is covered and that the students receive valuable information from their teaching. It also helps in coaching children under an environment whereby they can reflect their feeling based on the effects of the environment. The ultimate goal is for the students to develop awareness of their environment which will lead towards understanding the natural balances. It will thus help in shaping them to embrace positive environmental ethics which will guide their future behaviors.

Name Origins and Mission Statement

Founded in the year 1989 and opened two years later, the College Settlement is a non-profit organization which aims to improve the conditions of the community around by providing commitment housing, youth development projects and recreational as well as teaching children camping services.

The College Settlement programs are put in place to provide important and accessible educational programs to the minority as well as low-income students. For over three decades, the College Settlement’s Readiness Program has mainly helped high school students in achieving their dreams and goals. Therefore, it is the mission of the College Settlement to tutor, mentor, and encourage the students while promoting successful enrollment at competitive higher educational institutions.

Location

As mentioned earlier, College Settlement is located in Horsham Township which is Montgomery County. It is a municipality within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is the region with the largest designation in Pennsylvania. Its location is shown in figure 2.

Current State

Arts and Culture

There is Central Pennsylvania Festival of Arts which is commonly called "Arts Fest," which is annually held in July. It is a five-day festival which features various artists across the country, and it draws more than 125,000 visitors. Three are several events also during the year which pave the way for THON weekend which is held on February. Figure 3 shows the first time THON event which was held in the year 2007 in the Bryce Jordan Center which is on the University Park campus of the Penn State.

There are also annual sports. It is known for Nittany Lions Football which commonly draws over 100, 000 fans in the Beaver Stadium during home games. The entry fee to games is used to support the program of College Settlement.

Charges

Most of the programs are supported by donations countrywide. However, they charge some amount for the camp services. They charge between $75 up to $660 for a twelve-day sessions of the camp. However, the fee is not enough to cover and fill the gap, and hence they depend on donation to cover extra expenses. Most of the 12-day session individuals pay $250 which covers mainly 10% of the total costs incurred.

Conclusion

The College Settlement is the most important organization in Philadelphia. It's historic past with aims to boost the cultural, educational and social sector of the community has contributed a lot to the Philadelphian community. Most of the students have realized their dreams and goals due to services offered by the college. Its contribution to the minority and less-privileged in the community is inevitable to the community today and in the future.

Recommendations

The College Settlement is facing financial problems in funding its services. The crucial camp services and education are important to the minority groups and the children who are facing challenges in the community. There is a need to look for an effective funding from the government agency and sponsorship programs which will aid in funding all the activities and services offered.
