Homework #5 – Air Quality Impact Analysis & Pollution Rose

Problem Description
Objectives: The objectives of this homework assignment are to:
1. Use Excel to create a pollution rose diagram for the area surrounding a source emitting
PM2.5 for the specific given modeling scenario below. The dispersion modeling results you
will use are provided in a separate spreadsheet (HW05_DispersionData.xlsx).
2. Use the pollution rose to identify regions surrounding the source that the dispersion
modeling estimates will be impacted by PM2.5 concentrations above preexisting background
levels by greater than or equal to 1.75 µg/m3 resulting from this source and given modeling
scenario.
3. Analyze and compare the given modeling scenario against alternate modeling scenarios.
The goal here is to determine how the impacts on air quality would be expected to change
under these alternate scenario conditions. Consider a) the alternate stabilities of only D
and F, b) alternate PM2.5 emission rates where at least one is greater and another is less
than the given rate, and c) alternate effective stack heights where at least one is greater
and one is less than the given effective stack height.
Modeling Scenario (using the “simple” dispersion model created for HW#4, Objective 2):
1. PM2.5 emission rate = 1.86 g/s
2. Effective stack height = 150 m
3. Stability = A
4. Wind speeds given in the table (provided in the separate Excel file) are the annual average
wind speeds for 36 compass directions.
Complete as Follows:
1 This assignment is to be completed in groups of 2 persons; the same 2 persons working
together in Homework #4.
2 Document your work as follows:
a) Objective 1: Submit an Excel file to document your work on creating the pollution rose.
b) Objective2: Prepare in a Word document, but submit as a pdf file, a discussion that uses
the results from Objective 1 to identify those areas surrounding the point source that
are impacted by the PM2.5 emissions as described above.
c) Objective 3: In the same document prepared for Objective 2, include your explanation
of how you expect the air quality impacts to change when considering the alternate
modeling scenarios. More specifically, focus only on those impacted areas identified in
Objective 2, and explain how you think they might change. Include your analysis results
(the data) in tables to support your explanation.
