Back in 21st November 1963, a team of young Marines gathered in the San Francisco previous night and slip off to Vietnam using the Greyhound bus that is has turned into a military bus hosting the rowdy guys. They are celebrating their final night of freedom with the cruel game known as ‘’dog fight’’ that entails each and every man setting out to identify the ugliest girl within their reach and inviting them to the party. Money is donated by everyone and the guy with the most obnoxious lady wins the jackpot. The participants include Birdlace, Boland, and Bernstein ‘’ the three Bees’’ this game has very simple rules. Each of the marines donates $50 to the pot. The three notorious guys set off to the town in search of potential dates.
Birdlace meets Rose the shy waitress who was also eagerly waiting to attend her first date and picks her as his date. Boland on the other side has managed to bring with him Marcy who is a near toothless prostitute. He is eager to win the jackpot. Birdlace seems to be pissed off with Rose as he is trying to avoid her at all cost. Boland emerges the win since Marcy is the ugliest. Marcy, later on, discloses the real meaning of the occasion in the ladies’ room. Rose hurriedly attended the party upon invitation without making an inquiry about the event. The most exciting thing to her was that it was her fast date.
The three, later on, travels to the arcade and lastly to a prostitute as part of their last night celebrations. The marines seem to be very reckless and invincible, but Birdlace refuses to join the two in the mischief. He goes back to Rose to apologize for the hurting disappointment he has cost her at the game. The two promise to never discuss anything concerning the dog fight. They organize a fast date of last night.
Rose seem to have tricked Birdlace for his lies; they try to understand each other by sharing a meal at the same table with close breath at the swanky restaurant. After which the two moved to the Golden Gate Bridge. Rose feels great after these great moments, and her self-confidence is enhanced. She seems a new and beautiful later, contrary to the previous perception of herself. The two share a sexual experience at Rose’s place.
The following morning, when Birdlace lands in San Francisco, back to his friends, he encounters the cruel and harsh treatment of the world. The marines head overseas, a place of pawns the upcoming Vietnam. He witnessed the buddies being slain in action. The hash memories seem to have smashed him into pieces. It can be evidenced as he arrived in San Francisco in 1967. His facial expression portrays a frustrated, confused and broken man unexpected and a curse to the society. The city has changed, and he noticed that in his mission in search of Rose. She finally welcomes him home. The love story that had an awkward beginning unfolds itself towards the end of the story.
Conclusively, the lady whom Birdlace at first ignored at the party, embarrassed and hurt becomes his savior and soul mate when everything has turned against him. She is the only person who could warmly welcome him home.
