In this clip we are going to talk about the you orientation as a business communication style. I want you to focus on the different facial expression, body movement and voice tone. Because we are going to see two different example of the you orientation one is good and the other is not. Let’s see if you can find out which one is good and which one is bad after we see the clip.

As we saw earlier in Alicia’s clip and this clip too Mr BIALYSTOCK wanted to make sure that he gave a good advice to MR bloom which is not to be offended and not to offend others and he repeat it twice. Because it’s an important point in the you orientation. especially if you didn’t know your audience because they might say or do something that offends you. In this case Mr BIALYSTOCK know that they are going to meet strangers.

And when the attendant asked them to take their shoes off its obvious from their facial expression that this is a weird ritual, but they did it anyway. Why because they wanted Mr DE BRIS and CARMEN to join the play so bad.

Now let’s see what we can learn from the other clip about the you orientation.

At the beginning of the scene Mr De Bris (the gay with the dress) said a joke which was not funny, but Mr BIALYSTOCK would laugh anyway. Imagen he didn’t do that. The stuatuion then would be very awkward and they might end up losing the deal.

Also when Mr De Bris asked Mr Bloom about his dress, obviously Mr Bloom was shocked and embarrassed. Therefore, Bloom couldn’t complement the dress because he didn’t like it. Then Bialystock jumped in and complement the dress in an exaggerated way. This shows the important of giving complements. Because it’s a way to engage your audience and grab their attention. And this is something we learned through this whole semester! Of course I’m not going to say how but we learned it.

Another point BIALYSTOCK demonstrate about the you orientation when he jumped in. that you and your group have to be in the same boat if not you have to control the group before they damage the relationship. Having a friend with you has an advantage because you might need someone who fixe the situation. However, with power comes responsibility. You want to make sure that your friend is helping not hurting.
