APA 2010 Guide

Basics:

Please remember APA 2010 style guidelines for in-text citations and references are required in accordance with syllabus and rubrics.

Please use spell check and also proof read your assignments.

Do not use all CAPITALS in APA 2010 or academic writing except for the running head.

Paper format: APA 2010, 8.03 12-point Times New Roman for all body text.

Indent the first line of each paragraph one-half inch (Hanging Indent).

Per APA, do not use contractions

it’s = a contraction for it is. its = possessive - use its.

Direct Quotations

Single author or APA 2010, 6.11 One Work by One Author

Beginning of the sentence: Teeple (2015) stated

At the end of the sentence: (Teeple, 2015).

Two Authors or APA 2010, 6.12 One Work by Multiple Authors

Madden and Hogan (1997) claimed (No ampersand (&))

(Madden & Hogan, 1997).

On referencing three or more authors use of et al.

On the first time used all authors are cited

Beginning of sentence: Bowersox, Closs, Cooper, and Bowersox (2013) claimed

End of sentence: Bowersox, Closs, Cooper, & Bowersox, 2013).

The next time used we can use et.al .

Bowersox et al. (2013) stated

End of sentence (Bowersox et al., 2013).

Combining Two Sources of Information

Put in alphabetical order (Simmons, 2007; Zarajczyk, 2007).

Defining Acronyms and Abbreviations

Spell out all but common abbreviations and acronyms the first time they are used.

Example is Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR). See APA 2010, 4.23

Use words to express 1-9

Use numerals to express numbers 10 and above

Periods used with in-text citation

The period is after the in-text citation

Alphabetical order on references on reference page ( Sort in alpha surname/title order) (APA 2010, 6.25). Same Author oldest year first.

APA 2010 Formats (note Periods, dates, Italics)

Last Name, First Name Initial, Middle Initial. (Year). Name of publication in italics. City, State: Publisher.

Agency. (year). Name of publication in italics. City, State: Publisher.

Author. (year). Title in italics. Retrieved from http://www.xxxxxxx

Do not copy and paste the URL address by itself: http://www.xxxxxxx

Use APA format: Author. (year). Title in italics. Retrieved from http://www.xxxxxxx

Italics:

We do not italics to the left side of the (date).

All titles of web pages, books, journals, regulations, NTSB reports, etc. (No italics for Blogs)

Title Case and italics = Journal Title, Magazine Name, Newspaper only.

Note: article within the journal, magazine, newspaper is not italics (sentence case)

Sentence case = The title of a book, website, or other independently printed reference APA 2010, 6.29, 6.30.

We do not use Retrieved date from xxxxx in APA 2010 - See example

Dates are (Year) only

Except for Newspapers (Year, Month, Day) and Magazines =

(Year, Month, Day) or (Year, Month), and Blogs (Year, Month, Day).

Use of (n.d.). If there is no website year, you may use the (Year) you retrieved the document or website copyright (at bottom of webpage).
