Geotechnics A – Triaxial test lab

Using the tabs below, you can now explore the Triaxial telemetry for all of the Triaxial tests so far carried out by the various groups. They are arranged in ascending cell pressures (σ3). As there are a few more groups left to complete this lab, this document will have further tabs added over the next few weeks. However, from these tabs you are expected to choose a minimum of six cell pressure data sets that you feel will best enable you to:

· Plot at least six deviator stress v axial strain line graphs on the same chart. This will require you to be able to calculate the changing cross-sectional area of the sample throughout the test procedure.

· Identify the failure values of deviator stress and strain on each line graph, and then correct the deviator stress at failure value in accordance with 9.5.6 of BS1377-7:1990 (membrane thickness is 0.2 mm).

· Plot six or more Mohr Circles as instructed in the lab session based on all of the σ3 and σ1 (σ3 + P/A) values.

· Plot the resultant tangent line that will give you both the angle of shearing resistance (ΦU) and the apparent cohesion (cu).

The data sets will only contain the displacement and load telemetry logged during the test. All of the other data can be calculated from these two variables, and the knowledge that the sample began the test with a length of 76mm and a diameter of 38mm. Abstract

Trixial experiment released for the geotechnical module aims to determine the undrained shear strength of a soil sample:BS 1377: Part 7: 1990. The triaxial compression test consists on a test with no “pore water pressure measurement. In addition there was only one sample of soil tested by the group B. However, the apparatus of this experiment is basically a cell that is filled by “water under pressure”. Moreover in this experiment the spicemen suffers from a vertical load that increases gradually and deforms the original specimen until the moment of failure. However, on this experiment the cell pressure used were: 125, 250, 400, and 800 Kpa and it was possible to notice results of 52.85 kN/m2 of apparent cohesion and approximately of 6 degrees of angle of shearing resistance. Introduction

On the undrained triaxial compression experiment: BS 1377: Part 7: 1990 the goal was to determine and calculate the “undrained shear strength of soil” which was sand. In addition, this test, it is only possible by using a specific apparatus that is the triaxial cell. Moreover, on this test the triaxial cell is always filled having water under pressure and a specific specimen is pressure by an upward load vertically with a proving ring to help on measure the load applied. However the specimen suffer from vertical loads as it was referred previously until it reaches a point of failure. Moreover, in this test until it is noticed the failure the specimen has to suffer from a vertical load that is increased gradually. Besides that, the vertical strain is also record simultaneously by using the dial gauge. On the other hand it is also important to refer that any test has a different value of cell pressure (σ3) consequently, on this experiment, the test is repeated using different specimens by using the same soil with different cell pressure values(σ3).

Meanwhile, by doing this test, it is also critical to mention that the load exercised divided by cross sectional area results the deviator stress and the deviator stress changes during the test due to the fact that the load and the cross sectional area is increased gradually. in addition, on this test it is necessary to take into account that the spiceman volume does not change throughout the test and this volume measured by assuming that the specimen in question is a cylinder.

According to (Rees) , the triaxial test is considered one of the most “versatile and widely” test in comparison to other laboratory test in geotechnical. Besides the triaxial test is used to determine “ shear strength and stiffness of soils and rocks 2 having as advantages over the other test due to the fact that on it the procedures are much simpler on determining this characteristics. Moreover, in this test, it is possible to say that the it has the ability to “ control the thespicemen drainage and to take measurements of pore water pressures”. Regarding to the properties that can be determined of the soil and rocks by doing this test are usually , the angle of shearing ( resistance (ϕ) the apparent cohesion (cu), shear stiffness ( G) compression index ( Cc) and permeability ( K) (Rees).

In accordance with (Rees), the specimen of soil normally involved on triaxial test has a range of 38mm to 100mm of diameter and it has also a ratio of 2:1 height – to –diameter but in the experiment taken on the laboratory by the student had 38 mm diameter and it was 76 mm long . In addition, the specimen involved in this experiment normally is sealed with a rubber membrane. However before the start of the test the specimen is initial prepared and it has to be “ saturated, consolidated and shearing “ letting the specimen to react in order to be “observed under conditions approximately to those in- situ” (Rees).

Types of triaxial test.

As (Rees) says for the triaxial test that can be made on the laboratory, there are three different soil test used for distinct engineering applications which are: the Unconsolidated Undrained test (UU), Consolidated Undrained test(CU) and Consolidated Drained test (CD).

The Consolidated Undrained test (CU) which is the test in question is considered “the most common triaxial procedure”. finally, it is important to say that on this test the rate of shearing is faster in comparison with the consolidated drained test and it is reached when it is recorded the excessive pore pressure change in the specimen while the sharing “takes place” (Rees).

Triaxial Cell(Apparatus):

Experimental Procedure

1. Extrude the sample from the tube and trim to size – soil sample of 38mm diameter and 76mm long.

2. Sleeve the sample with the rubber membrane.

3. Put the sample on the pedestal at the bottom of the cell and seal with the rubber ring.

4. Place the loading cap on top of the sample and seal with rubber ring, before securing top drainage tube.

5. Mount the cell over the sample and fill as per the Flooding Triaxial Cell checklist.

6. Set-up the test with the Clisp Studio assistant, and complete the Pressurising Triaxial Cell checklist before running the test stages.

7. When test stages are complete, end the test via Clip Studio and complete the Draining Triaxial Cell checklist.

Discussion

On this experiment, it was noticeable the values recorded and calculated. First of all, it needed to reference that in this test were a based on 4 different minor stress such as 125, 250, 400 and 800Kpa in order to plot the Mohr circle diagram. Apparently by plotting the semi-circles resulted by the diameters obtained from the subtraction of sigma one and sigma two. In addition, this Mohr Circle diagram it was noticed that there were two semi- circles that got the higher diameters and having other two being too way below the line of failure. However, by plotting the two largest semi-circles, it was possible to find the apparent cohesion and and also to determine the shearing resistance angle. Moreover The result for the results of the apparent cohesion and shear resistance angle was at 6.25 degrees and approached to six by the AutoCAD. The result calculated on the moisture percentage of moisture shown avalue of approximately 290 % of average.

On the other hand, this experiment in terms of results and calculations taught the students the second year how the deformation of a circle sample is studied by suffering from pressure. In additions by calculating the values shown on the tables of excel sheet from 125 kPa to 800 kPA , turned possible to see the load exercised by triaxial machine until the moment of failure ,however it was also seen the deformation itself during the laboratory session. Besides, the values of X calculated according to the deformation in gauge values seen on those excel spread sheets, were necessary in order to calculated the area of deformation. Furthermore, it is also fundamental to say that despise of having deformation by the sample on this experiment the volume of it remained constant.

Finally, attached to the those test is the fact that values of strain and deviator stress were studied by the student. Moreover, the values for strain were only possible to be calculated due the values of X. On the other hand the stress deviator values calculated were necessary in order to calculate the sigma one used on the semi-circles during the Mohr circle diagram.

Conclusion

To sum up, by analysing the results of the triaxial experiment, it is possible to say that this experiment is much complex than the shear box experiment due to reason that in it the pressure of water is involved. In addition the water drainage, in this test can be controlled. Meanwhile by taking the result such as 125, 250, 400 and kPa the line which represents the failure it was possible to determine the shearing resistance angle and apparent cohesion which were at 6.25 degrees and 52.85kN/m2 respectively. However the sample moisture calculated in this experiment was percent. Finally, after attending to this laboratory test the can be able to calculate the initial area of the specimen and the respective deformation throughout the whole experiment. Moreover the deviator stress and strain could also be calculated by using the deformation gauge reading (mm) and force gauge reading.

Method statement

3. Each student should be aware with the safety measures when using the experimental tools

4. Everybody must ensure what to do in case of emergency

B. Whilst Undertaking the LABORATORY WORK

1. Ensure having dry hands before switching on or off the electrical equipment

2. Fix the two halves of the shear box with great care

3. Use the loading hangers carefully
