Importance of the Report Comment by Gana Pathmanathan: Is this section necessary?

The significant of this report is to explain contemporary OB concept and theories and how they can be applied to improve the behavior of both the working staff and the manager in the organization. Analyzing employees motivational issues should always be the aim of every organization. This is important because for an organization to achieve its organizational goal there must be a high contribution of the employees. The manager can only ensure that organizational resources are fully utilized by motivates the employees. Employees are resources of the organizational and there necessary for them to do their best in efforts to achieve the organizational goals. Higher efficiency in the organization can be achieved by implementing the various organizational behavior concepts. Organizational structure is an important thing in every organization. This is because it helps in delegation of duties to the working staff. Therefore, it is important to have a hierarchy in organization so as prevent any conflict that may result due to flow of control and nil scrutiny (Allaire & Firsirotu, 2013).

Employees Motivational Issues Comment by Gana Pathmanathan: Critically evaluates the application of relevant OB concepts and theories to the situation introduced in the TV show. There are no clear OB concepts presented in this section.

The first episode of the TV shows “The Office” present the company that is portrayed in the series of that kind of company that do not follow organizational ethics. This may as a result affect the morale of the employees. Some of the employee motivational issues include:

Unclear Requirement and Expectation: There is no assurance of the job security of the employees. This in a way affects the company since employees are not motivated to work hard. They stay in fear of losing their job thus not able to focus fully on organizational goals. Manager who provides inconsistent feedback and failure to set clear expectation for the workforce may create a workplace condition which gives room for development of motivational issues. This may make employees feel lost and thus not be able to work harder towards achieving the organizational goals due to failure of the manager to provide direction with regards to proper performance.

Inadequate working materials: Lack of enough materials to carry out various organizational activities may result to motivational problems. In the series the “The Office” we see the assist manager sharing some work items with other employees which result to conflict to an extent of doing something to punish each other. Employees may feel as if they are undervalued by the management staff since they do not have the necessary equipment to carry out the obligations that are assigned to them. If the management failure to make the items that is needed available, it may damage the motivation of the employees towards achieving the organizational goals (Yurtseven & Halici, 2011).

Lack of appraisal: It is important to reward performance that exceeds the standards of the organization. Some of the rewards like special monthly recognition or sale bonus may result to employees motivational issues at the workplace since the employee may assume that the management takes the high productivity for granted. This mainly occurs in the scenario where the employee pay scale is not in line with level of performance or work or is below the average of the industry. Some of the workers who are discouraged may result to diminishing their motivation and thus lower productivity so as to compensate for the perceived lack of competitive pay.

Discrimination in recruitment: The TV shows” The Office” start in way that a person is seeking a job. There no formalities that was followed. This is not good especially is the organizational that what to achieve the set targets. It is important for the manager to show the highest level of organizational ethics. Fairness and just in the process of recruitment is one of the important character traits in leadership. The manager should focus on hiring employees who are more qualified to do the job. This way the organizational will have the right working staff that will help it in achieving the organizational goals.

Having one person who has a say on employee issue. A company should have more than one management staff. This will help in prevention of the one acting for his/her own benefits. This is shown when Michael who is the manager of the organization that is portrayed in the TV show” The Office” makes a prank to fires the secretary. He claimed that the secretary has stolen some items that belong to the organization. This allegation has no bases and it is not true. This is simply no one was there to question the decision made by the manager since only one person seem to control all important activities of the organization.

Analysis of Organizational Concept and theories

It is necessary to study the impact of groups, structure, individuals and group on the behavior of human in the organization. Vroom expectancy theory of motivation assumes result of behavior from conscious choice among the available alternatives whose purpose is to minimize pain and maximize pleasure. The performance of employees is based on the various factors like skills, personality and knowledge (Baker, 2014). The TV show portrays people who have experience and are passionate about what they are doing. Pam who is the receptionist of the company seems to know her job. She keeps the manager updated about the activities of the organization. Other working staffs seem to be very experienced in whatever they are doing. The organization should ensure that it has the right resources, skill and the necessary support so as to achieve its organizational goals. Comment by Gana Pathmanathan: Critically evaluates the application of relevant OB concepts and theories to the situation introduced in the TV show. You’ve mentioned Vroom’s theory but have not applied it. Comment by Gana Pathmanathan: Outstanding discussion of the theory that begins the process of critical thinking. Excellent integration of arguments well supported by the relevant literature. You’ve mentioned Vroom’s theory but have not described it

A manager has a big responsible in efforts to achieve organizational goals. It is important for every organization to have an effective manager. Michael who is the manager of the organization seems to have a good relationship with the workforce. He even says that all his working staffs are first friends to him. This has worked very well for the organization that is portrayed in the TV show “The Office”. Though Michael has good relationship with employee, he seems not draw a line of professionalism between him and the employees. This is seen when he did not disciplined James who mishandled some item of the company. He even teases Pam about termination of her job in the company due to gross misconduct. It is not okay for a manager to do that because in way it might affect the morale of the employees. Comment by Gana Pathmanathan: Outstanding discussion of the theory that begins the process of critical thinking. Excellent integration of arguments well supported by the relevant literature. You’ve mentioned the term effective manager but not described it

Intrinsic motivation is basically focuses on the behavior that is usually driven by internal rewards. Intrinsic motivation comes from within a person. It usually when a person finds a task interesting and is able to get satisfaction from performing it (Turner & Baskerville, 2012). James who an employee of the company that is portrayed in the TV show say he is only best at sales. He seems to be passionate of what he is doing. This is as a result of intrinsic motivator that he has about sales.

Extrinsic Motivation is Behavior that is driven by the external rewards. It is important to try and reward those employees who have made extra ordinary achievement as a way of motivating them. It is necessary to have a health competition in the organization. Employees get motivated when they have added benefits to what they are doing. The organization that is presented in the TV show “The Office” was to trying to come with a health plan where the employees will be guaranteed of health benefits. This will motivate the employees and make them feel more appreciated.

All sections of the report format are addressed. Report is well written with no grammar and typographical errors. Referencing is academic, current, and correctly APA6th formatted. Its better to keep the recommendations in three separate paragraphs; one for each of the three required recommendations.

It is necessary for organizational to come up with ways in which the motivations of the employees can be improved. One of the ways the organization presented in the TV show ”The Office” can ensure that the employees morale is improved is being transparent in the expectations of the organization. It is important to explain the organizational goals to the employees and the ways in which the manager will ensure they are achieved. The second way that the morale of the employees is improved is by providing a continuous feedback. The employees should feel appreciated by ensuring you give feedback to their grievances or other issues that may need feedback from the senior staff. Michael who is the manager of the organization presented in the TV show “The Office” tells Pam that she should consult the human resource management if she is unhappy with her compensation. The third way is by strongly believing in employees. It is important to strongly believe on your employees and provide guidelines where necessary. The fourth way the company can motivate its employees is by setting achievable goals. The organizational goals of the organization should be achievable at all time. Lastly is by giving incentives to the employees who have made extra ordinary achievements (Finkelstein & Kosa, 2013). James who seems to be the best sales person is not rewarded for that. Comment by Gana Pathmanathan: Recommendations are insightful, well explained and justified with the appropriate literature. They show evidence of critical thinking and good understanding of the theory. Try to clearly link the recommendations back to the analysis. There is no reference to theory either explicitly or implicitly, nor is there any reference to literature.
