Dear Portfolio Committee:

As I grow up, in all my school levels I learned only one language which is my mother tongue. Once, as I came to the United States, I went to international English language institute to study English which was totally a new language for me literally speaking I had absolutely no experience with English as a language before. After a few months in the Institute I became a better English speaker. I exceled in English very fast but my first encounter with writing assignment which left me clueless because writing was not my cup of tea. I always had difficult time to write my thoughts on paper. However, with time I overcame this problem and gradually I developed more skills which helped me to become a better writer.

Since I joined the University, our class has been working on papers. Narrative stands out for me. At the beginning of this semester, I had a few adjustments that I was going through. It did not affect me much since I did not let what I was going through reflects in my writings. However, I felt more comfortable when the semester progressed as a writer and a person. I have had an excellent chance to put my writing skills into practice with the assignments given to us by the professor. I have grown, and there is a vast improvement in my writings. But, things were not always rosy, I remember in one of my assignments about critical writing, I was not sure about what to write

Back homes, my friends and I used to read books during our free time. Despite the many challenges that presented itself along the way, I was able to achieve my dreams of being good in English. I had support from my family who always brought me inspirational books and articles that further developed my understanding of the English language. I gained new friends with whom we have been able to encourage and influenced each other with the way we write and speak. Most of my time is spent in the libraries using helpful resources such as the writing center.

My first essay talks about ‘Online Game.” I specifically chose the topic because of its evolution over the last decades and being one of the fastest technologies in the modern world. Gamers especially children are being affected thus making parents afraid of the long term effects. It is evident that online games are addictive and it has become a challenge just like drug addiction. However, there are good things about online gaming that developed further my interest in writing about the games. My writing was basically to explain some of the interesting stuff about games and how they can help an individual enhance their interpersonal skills. The few times that I have been playing video games have contributed to release the tension and relax my mind after having a long day. It has also helped me catch up with my friends since we can only meet when we want to play due to our busy schedules. In my findings, online games are played online, and players interact with each in a virtual world. However, I had some challenges during my writing. Finding credible source proved to be difficult. To make sure that I find credible sources, I utilized the school library and the internet to find information.

I also found out many sources on academic research. I think my essay will be useful to any reader who is concerned with studying cultural and communicative aspects of online games. My Writing of the topic was not just for the purpose of spending time with my friends but to be used for future use by other researchers. I spend a lot of time researching online especially to get the facts about online games. My findings were fascinating especially in the societal impact of online gaming.

My second essay “Demystifying Academic” is a narrative of how people started writing. Some individual’s started writing at a tender age because of passion while others came to discover that they can be good writers as they mature. I can be reflected in my personal experiences. My essay also illustrates the difficulties that students face in writing such as writing errors. In my case, I had the difficulties at first, but I was able to eliminate the mistakes through practice and to read more and more articles. I think the connection that I have with the reader is our interest in writing. Writing is the best thing that can ever happen to any student in their studying life. I wrote the essay to encourage individuals who are yet to develop and enhance their writing skills to know where they are wrong and rectify their mistakes for them to be good writers. It is also imperative to note that writing takes a lot of one’s time. In my effort to find more information about narratives, I looked at the best ways to write down descriptions to make it easier for the readers to understand better. I had to research mostly on the internet to find suggestions from other experienced writers.

My third essay is “Why some Societies practiced” The theme is based on human sacrifice. There have been stories of human sacrifice since ancient times. In one of the articles that I once read, human sacrifice is intimately associated with the sanctity of blood and cultism. My main idea of writing the essay was drawn from a movie I watched on a human sacrifice that is still being practiced in some parts of the world. My primary objective was to find out the cause of the problem since sacrificing fellow human is violating their right to live. While studying on the topic, I experienced some few challenges. Being a sensitive case, many individuals that I approached concerning the topic feared opening up and share information. Previous research on the topic also is limited as very few studies have been carried out concerning human sacrifice. To make sure that I find information, I had to explain to people the objective of my study for them to give me information. Since there have not been previous studies, I had to make sure that I get information from primary sources for credibility purposes. Human sacrifice causes pain to the victims and death. I wanted to find out why the communities performed the rituals and came up with strategies that can help avert the problem.

In my third essay, in my revision process, it was astonishing to discover that human sacrifice was associated with cultism due to infertility of the soil; the people are sacrificed to appeal to the gods of fertility make the soil fertile. My essay will be of great importance as it is evident that am not the only one who is interested in the issue of human sacrifice.
