The first stage of this model is the initiating stage. In this stage, you first meet someone. Sometimes it will include some “small talk” such as the weather or how a sports team is doing.

The experimenting phase of the relationship is marked by conversation about feelings and beliefs. Research suggests that women tend to be most comfortable developing relationships in this phase of relational development.

The intensifying stage of a relationship is marked by going out and doing something. Research indicates that men tend to be most comfortable developing relationships in this stage. If you consider the idea of male bonding, it is marked by going out and playing basketball, golf, or some other physical activity. There is discussion but it is frameworked by activity.

The integrating stage occurs when the people start introducing their larger social circles. During this phase friends meet other friends, or meeting parents. In the business world, we call the events of this stage “networking.”

During the bonding phase, the two people begin to be recognized as a single social unit. In personal relationships, this might be a marriage or engagement. In business relationships, it is the formation of the partnership. You are identified according to your relationship with the other person.

In the differentiating stage, you begin to assert your individuality from the other person. Rather than being known as Suzie’s husband, you assert your own identification.

In the circumscribing phase, small conflicts begin to occur that really don’t have much consequence by themselves, but when added to each other create a lot of conflict (we will look at conflict in Unit X)

In the stagnating stage, the relationship hits a rut. We tend to do the same things over and over again, without any growth in the relationship.

In the avoiding stage, rather than terminate the relationship, we begin to avoid the other person. Usually this stage occurs just before the final stage.

In the final stage, the relationship terminates. This is the end of the relationship. However, it is possible to terminate a relationship and reinitiate it later.

As you have noticed, each of the stages ends in –ing. Why? This is to show that all relationships are active. We are actively in a stage of a relationship. A relationship IS NOT passive.

These five stages of the model show the increasing of intimacy that occurs in the relationship. Intimacy is a shared closeness with the other person. Every relationship has a certain intimacy that is involved.

Likewise, these stages show the degrading of a relationship and a decreased intimacy.

*

Can you. . .

  • Identify the 10 stages of relational development

*

If so, then. . .

You are prepared to write the IPC Paper.
