English 1010 Evaluation Essay Write a 1200 word essay on one of the topics below. Your essay must be in MLA format, typed, and double- spaced. Your essay should contain a minimum of five well-developed paragraphs (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion). You may create your own topic, but it must be approved by me before you begin writing the essay. Essays must be submitted in the correct folder in the Assignment Dropbox in D2L. This is an argumentative essay, so you need to provide a clear thesis and supporting arguments (criteria) in your introduction. Your essay must be clearly organized, and each paragraph must support your thesis statement; your thesis should state your argument concerning the judgment you are making about your topic. Your essay must have a thesis (your judgment) and supporting arguments in order to receive a passing grade. You are required to use at least one source of research for this essay. Your source must be thoroughly reliable and credible. Sources must be approved by the instructor. You must include at least one quotation from your source. All sources must be correctly cited, quoted, and acknowledged. Failure to quote from your source or attach a Works Cited page will result in a grade of zero for the essay. Do not use the 1st or 2nd person in this essay—do not use the “I” voice. Remember to refrain from ad hominem attacks (attacking the person); you must select criteria/reasons that are agreed upon by most people and specific to the context. For example, the criteria used to evaluate a song would not be the criteria used to evaluate a webpage. Do not evaluate something or someone with criteria that do not apply. You can choose a topic based upon hobbies, sports, teams, music, politics, etc. You may choose to write about what constitutes a great pet, quarterback, pop singer, politician, hamburger, date, friendship, student, etc. Select a topic that interests you. Avoid topics that are overused—you will be unable to say anything new. For example, papers about how John F. Kennedy was a great president or how George W. Bush was or was not a great president are boring because these topics have been discussed ad nauseam.
