HEALTHCARE FOR THE GERIATRIC AGE GROUP
I. Introduction
The Geriatric age group is composed of the old people. In most cases, this age group is having medical compilations and need special health care. The government has placed different initiatives to make sure that the American population can be able to make the American nation be prepared.
II. Body Paragraph
Claim: There are different assistances which the government can offer the geriatric age group. The government has the Administration on Aging (AOA) which aims at listing the available programs the government has for the aging people. All the services are listed, but the common ones are community-based services, transportation of the elderly, adult day care and caregiving support (Maddox, & Springer Publishing Company, 1995). An elderly person can find the retirement savings to be handy.
III. Body Paragraph
Claim: The elderly can also access financial assistance from the government. Because of the condition, they require assistance for they are weak and unable to work. The most important financial assistance to the elderly is the social security (Jacobs et al, 2016). When a person is between the age of 62 and 70 years, they can apply for social security benefit.
IV. Body paragraph
Claim: Apart from family, an elderly person can get assistance from family members and community. There are some cases where the health care system is unable to take care of the patient because they need close monitoring (Sines, Appleby, & Frost, 2005). Patients who are suffering from chronic illness usually require such attention and the family member can assist them in this case.
V. Sometimes it is argued that the aged are better off when they receive assistance from private institution other than the government. However, this type of assistance is usually expensive and the aged have fallen in the dependent bracket, that is, they depend on someone else. The government’s services such as Medicare is put in place for the sake of the aged. Medicaid is meant for the poor who receive a low income. Therefore, even is the private institution are seen to have high-quality services, the cost of the services is high, and the geriatric age group mostly has retired and cannot afford such services (Harrington & Estes, 2008).
VI. Conclusion
Therefore, we can see that the geriatric age group need assistance. They require medical assistance as well as financial assistance. There are various types of medical assistance such as social security and medical assistance such as Medicaid and Medicare. Others argue that private institution has better and high-quality services. However, the cost is high, and the geriatric age group cannot afford it.
