Step 1: Find a quote/idea that you think supports an idea in your essay. Read the quote/idea several times until you understand it without looking at the original words. In 25 sentences, put the idea into your own words. {example: In the past, politicians promised voters they would create a happy society where people benefit from laws and policies, but these politicians were unable to deliver their promises, and society grew upset and disillusioned. Voters lost faith in these politicians, and these politicians lost control and power. Recently, politicians have been playing a different game of influence and social control. They stopped offering people promises of a better life. Instead, they started exaggerating fears around the world and promised voters they had the ideas and policies to keep people safe from evil.
Step 2: Set up your quote with complete author attribution: According to [first name] [last name], [position/status], ["quoted information"] [page # or paragraph #]. {example: According to Adam Curtis, BBC journalist and documentarian, "[M]uch of this threat is a fantasy, which has been exaggerated and distorted by politicians. It's a dark illusion that has spread unquestioned through governments around the world, the security services, and the international media" (par. 1).}
Step 3: Write 25 sentences of your own commentary/ opinions/ conclusions regarding #1 and #2. {example: This kind of propaganda of fear is one of the reasons why many people around the world, but especially in the United States and much of the West, do not have a good understanding of Islam and Muslims. Politicians have created an atmosphere of fear that they use to manipulate people to get their votes. Once in office, these politicians rarely make society better. They just continue to stoke people's fears and promise safety from a perceived danger.}
