Introduction to Procedure Writing
PROCEDURE: Merriam-Webster
1. a series of actions that are done in a certain way or order : an established or accepted way of doing something.
2.a series of steps followed in a regular definite order
3.a traditional or established way of doing things
PROCEDURE: System Safety
A document written to support a "Policy Directive". A Procedure is designed to describe Who, What, Where, When, and Why by means of establishing accountability in support of
the implementation of a "policy".
The "How" is further documented by each organizational unit in the form of "Work Instructions" which aims to further support a procedure by providing greater detail.

Instructions

Robot with Sword STEP 1: LEGS (six 2x2: two 2x3) 1: Assemble two stacks , each stack is three 2x2 blocks stacked on top of each other, flush on all four sides. 2: Attach one 2x3 to the bottom of stack, flush on three sides. This will leave toes protruding from the front of each leg 3: Set legs aside with ‘toes pointed up

STEP 2 TORSO (one 1x1 / one 1x6 / one 1x8 / two 2x2 / two 2x3 / three 2x4) 1: Begin with one 2x4, stack one 2x4 on top, flush on all four sides. 2: Place one 2x2 block in the middle of top 2x4 flush with the long sides. Leave equal space on each of the short sides 3: Place one 1x1 piece on the left hand corner away from you, flush with two sides and the center 2x2 piece. 4: Place one 1x6 on the remaining peg on the left hand front corner of the stack, flush with the short side and protruding from the front. 5: Place one 1x8 on the right side of the stack, flush with two sides and protruding from the front. 6: Place one 2x4 on stack, flush to all four sides. 7: Place one 2x2 on the stack flush front and rear, leaving a 1x2 space on each side 8: Place one 2x3 on each of 1x2 areas on the sides of the 2x2, 9: Place torso aside with arms pointing up.

STEP 3 HEAD (four 1x1 / five 1x2 /, two 1x4 / one 2x4 / one 2x6) 1: Place one 2x4 next to two 1x4 to form a 4x4 square. 2: place four 1X2 perpendicular to the direction of base pieces completely filing the back two rows.
3: place two 1X1 flush against the double row of yellow 1x2, flush to the outside. 4: Place one 2x6 on top of and flush with the two 1x1 pieces, with equal over hang on both sides. Place a series of 1x1, 1x2, 1x1, behind the 2x6. 5: place head aside

STEP 4: SWORD (ten 1x1 / one 1x3). 1: stack three 1x1 2: Place one 1x3 centered on top of stack. 3: Place seven 1x1 centered on the top of the 1x3. 4: Place sword aside.

STEP 5 1: attach legs to torso. The top of each leg should protrude 1x2 on each side and be flush with the front and back. 2: Attach Head. Place head centered on torso, flush to the front, there will be a 4x4 shoulder exposed on each side. 3: Attach Sword. Place sword in right arm by attaching one of the 1x1 exposed edges of the 1x3 hilt to the last bump on the right arm with the sword handle aligned with the front of the arm.

COURSE DESCRIPTION Course will present information on basic electrical theory, electrical safety program development. Students will be provided methods for hazard identification and hazard analysis in electrical applications in the work place. Applicable OSHA safety and consensus standards will be discussed. TRANSFORMATIONAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES (a.k.a. UCO’s “Central Six” Tenets) Discipline Knowledge; Leadership; Research, Creative and Scholarly Activities; Service Learning and Civic Engagement; Global and Cultural Competencies; and Health and Wellness. The University of Central Oklahoma has identified six transformative learning objectives that place students at the center of their own active and reflective learning experiences. While any single class may not touch on all six tenets, this course offers opportunities for students to become engaged in three (see above) of the six tenets. It is the goal of the university, college, and department to support and foster transformative learning in order for students to develop competencies for all six tenets in order to become productive, creative, and ethically engaged citizens who are able to initiate action in leadership roles. COURSE OBJECTIVES After successful completion of this course, my hope is that students will be able to … Demonstrate an understanding of basic electrical theory, circuits, and terminology.

Demonstrate an understanding of the effect that electricity has on the human body. Identify appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for various electrical tasks. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of an electrical safety program. Demonstrate an increased sense of personal and professional electrical safety on a daily
basis. TEXTBOOK & SUPPLIES Required:
• NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, ISBN: 978-145590893-6, American Technical Publishers, Inc. 2015 (available at University Center Bookstore)
• Three scantron answer sheets – #27120 (available at the UCO bookstore) • Calculator (not allowed to use cell phone calculator on exams) • Three ring binder with dividers.
All other required reading material is available online through the library, the internet or provided by the instructor. Additional information will be provided to assist students in locating these additional materials. ADA INFORMATION "The University of Central Oklahoma complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the American with Disabilities Act of 1990. Students with disabilities who need special accommodations must make their requests by contacting Disability Support Services, at (405) 974-2516. The DSS Office is located in the Nigh University Center, Room 309. Students should also notify the instructor of special accommodation needs by the end of the first week of class." EXAMS (150 points) This course will include three exams – two exams worth 25 points each (50 points) and a comprehensive final (100 points). These examinations may consist of multiple-choice, true/false, matching and short essay questions. Students will be able to use their own NFPA 70E text and their own notebook on the exams.
MISSED EXAM POLICY Students will not be allowed to make up a missed exam without approval from the instructor prior to the scheduled date of the exam. ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS – TERMINOLOGY, PROBLEMS, DISCUSSION FORUMS Terminology (4 assignments) – 50 total points

Each student will provide definitions for various electrical safety related terms. Students should first turn to NFPA 70E for the definitions and then to information from books, scholarly articles, government documents, or other approved sources. Websites may be used but must be approved by the instructor in advance (no Wikipedia). All definitions must include the source and page number. The definitions shall be recorded in a Word document and placed in the appropriate dropbox for grading. Each assignment and dropbox will become available on Thursday @ 8:00am during the week of the assignment with the dropbox closing three days later at 11:59pm on Sunday.
Problems (2 assignments) – 50 total points
Each student will complete a series of electrical safety related problems. These problems will be in the form on an online quiz. Students will be allowed two attempts on these problem quizzes. The problems and quiz will be available from Thursday @ 8:00am during the week of the assignment and close three days later at 11:59pm on Sunday.
Discussion Forums (7 assignments) – 70 total points This course will include 7 online discussion forums. The topic of the forum could be a video, journal article, or case study. Each student is required to create an original post and reply to at least two of the other student’s posts. Each discussion forum will remain open from Thursday @ 8:00am during the week of the assignment and close three days later at 11:59pm on Sunday. Student posts will be graded according to the discussion form grading rubric found near the end of this syllabus.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY PROCEDURE (25 points) DUE: November 18, 2016 Each student will write a research a procedure addressing a common electrical task. This paper is an exercise in developing analytical and critical thinking skills, and as an opportunity to express research in the form of a reasoned, consistent argument. Additional instructions for this assignment will be provided in class. NOTEBOOK (25 points) DUE: November 30, 2016 Each student will keep a notebook that could be used as a resource for establishing or modifying an electrical safety program. The structure of the notebook is left up to the student but should follow some logical organization scheme. Additional instructions for this assignment will be provided in class. Papers will be double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-font, with one-inch margins on the sides, top, and bottom. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

This list of assignments and method of delivery is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. ATTENDANCE
Class attendance is a vital component of learning. The classroom is where new concepts are introduced and questions answered. Nothing can substitute for the interaction that takes place in the classroom setting. Not attending class has been linked to a disappointing final grade. Please make every effort to: (a) be on time, (b) attend each class, and (c) actively participate in discussions and activities. A sign-in sheet will be used to track class attendance. Each student is responsible for ensuring they have signed the attendance sheet. PROFESSIONALISM (50 points) Professionalism points are tied to class attendance. Class meetings present 30 opportunities for the student to earn professionalism points. The student will earn 2 points for being in the classroom prior to the start of class and 1 point for arriving late.
Please notify me, in advance, if you will not be able to attend class. I understand that emergencies are sometimes unavoidable and will work with you on class related items during periods of personal crisis.
FINAL GRADE CALCULATION The student’s final grade is based on an accumulation of points. “Test Before Touch”
• Consider all circuits energized until tested.
• Test every circuit, every conductor, every time before you touch!
• PPE required until text completed. • Test instrument must be verified. • Knowledge of equipment is
essential. • Test circuit again if job continuity

Alertness
• Employees shall be instructed to be alert at all times when working in situations where electrical hazards might exist.
• Employees shall be instructed to be alert for changes in the job or task that may expose the person to additional hazards that were not part of the original plan.

Alertness
• Employees shall not be permitted near electrical hazards while alertness is recognizably impaired due to illness, fatigue, or other reasons.
• How would handle an employee who appears to have impaired alertness?
Blind Reaching
• No instance exists where it is necessary for an employee to reach into electrical equipment without having a direct line of sight.
• Should blind reaching only apply to electrical work?
Illumination
• Employees shall not enter spaces where electrical hazards exist without adequate lighting is provided to safety perform the work.
• Some employees may like to wear eyeglasses with tinted lenses and some face shields may be tinted. These could increase the chance of inadvertently contacting unintended energized points.

Conductive Articles on the Person
• Conductive articles or jewelry and clothing (watchbands, bracelets, rings, key changes, metal frame glasses, etc) shall not be work in the restricted approach boundary or where they present an electrical contact hazard.
• Why might metal framed glasses be a problem?
Conductive Tools and Equipment
• A conductive tool in the employee’s hand can be thought of simply as an extension of the hand.
• Wrapping tools with electrical tape is not sufficient to ensure protection against electrical shock.
• ASTM F 1505 – standard on insulated hand tools.
• What type policy would you adopt to protect the worker using tools near electrical hazards?
Confined or Enclosed Work Spaces
• Employer shall provide, and employee shall use, protective shields, protective barriers, or insulating materials to avoid inadvertent contact with electrical hazards.
• What could be a concern when using these “temporary” barriers?

Doors and Hinged Panels
• Doors, hinged panels, and the like shall be secured to prevent their swinging into an employee causing the employee to contact exposed energized electrical conductors.
Clear Spaces
• Working space shall be kept clear to permit safe operation and maintenance of electrical equipment
Housekeeping Duties
• Employees shall not perform housekeeping duties inside the limited approach boundary where there is a possibility of contact with energized electrical conductors or circuit parts.
• How could you prevent those performing housekeeping duties from being exposed to these electrical hazards?

Occasional Use of Flammable Materials
• Ensure that measures have been taken to prevent an electric ignition source from being introduced into an explosive environment.
• National Electric Code (NFPA 70) – Class I
• Flammable and combustible gases, vapors are or may be present under normal operations
– Class II • Combustible dusts are present
– Class III • Ignitable fibers and flyings are present
Anticipating Failure
• Some electrical equipment may present evidence of impending failure.
• What might be an example of this?
• Until the equipment is de-energized or repaired, employees shall be protected from hazards associated with impending failure through the use of barricades and other alerting equipment.
Reclosing Circuits After Protective Device Operation
• After a circuit is de-energized by an automatic operation of a circuit protection device, the circuit shall not be manually reenergized until it has been determined that the equipment and circuit can be safely energized.
