Lab

Voltage and Current Laws in Multisim

This week’s lab introduces you to the construction of a resistive network in Multisim.

You will learn to utilize Multisim to confirm your calculations.

Please use the following documentation to help you setup tolerances in Multisim.

1. Watch video entitled “Week 1 – Basic Components and Voltage and Current Laws in

Multisim”

2. Work Exercise 57 from Chapter 3. For the load resistors of 7 KΩ use the tolerance

levels in the table to perform calculations of ‘Vx’ to fill in the ‘Calculated Vx’ in the table

below.

3. Construct Figure 3.93 in Multisim.

a. Run simulation to measure the voltage drop across the 7KΩ resistor and record the

measurements in the first box under ‘Measured Vx’ column.

b. Now, add the tolerances to the resistor based on the tolerances in the table and run the

simulation to complete the table. (Use this document to set up tolerances in Multisim:

Setting Up Tolerances in Multisim)

c. Take the screen capture for all the measurements of ‘Vx’.

4. Answer the following questions:

a. Does the measured values match the calculated values? If not, explain why they are

different?

b. Describe the relationship between the resistance (7KΩ) and measured voltage ‘Vx’?

c. Explain the significance and the effect of adding resistor tolerances on your

measurements of ‘Vx’ in Multisim?

5. Create a new word document called “Lab1_StudentID.docx” with your GID substituted

into the file name.

6. Save the analysis from step 2 and simulation results from step 3 along with the table

and screen captures of all the measurements. Make sure to answer the questions in

step 4.

Circuit Analysis Techniques in Multisim

This week’s lab is based on the application of circuit analysis techniques to a resistive

circuit in Multisim. You will learn to utilize Multisim to perform the mesh analysis.

1. Work Exercise 48 from Chapter 4 to determine the current ‘i1’ and power supplied by

1V source.

2. Redo the problem, this time without the dependent current source ‘5i1’.

3. Fill in the calculated values in the table below:

b. Next, remove the dependent source ‘5i1’ from the circuit and run the simulation again

to record the measurements in the table. (Use 5% tolerances for each of the resistors)

c. Take the screen capture for the measurements of current and power supplied and

dissipated by each resistor and complete the table above.

5. Answer the following questions:

a. Are the measured values same as calculated values? If not, explain why they are

different?

b. Is the supplied power distributed among all the components in the circuit? Show that

total power supplied is equal to the sum of powers dissipated in each component.

c. What was the effect of removing the dependent source from the circuit? Does the

overall power supplied or power dissipated change?

6. Create a new word document called “Lab2_StudentID.docx” with your GID substituted

into the file name.

7. Save the analysis from step 1 & 2 and simulation results from step 4 along with the

table and screen captures of all the measurements. Make sure to answer the questions

in step 5.

Capacitive Circuits in Multisim

This week’s lab is based on the application of circuit analysis techniques to a capacitive

circuit in Multisim.

1. Watch the video lecture entitled “Week 3 - Capacitor Op-Amp Circuit in Multisim.

2. Construct Figure 7.36 in Chapter 7 (Example 7.11) with Vs = 3sin200tV, R1=20kohms,

Cf=5uF, and Vc(0) = 1.5 and find the output voltage ‘Vout’.

3. Interchange the positions of the capacitor and resistor and compute the output voltage

‘Vout’ and record the values in the table below.

a. Use the function generator to provide Vs to the circuit and run simulation to measure

the measurements of ‘Vout’ in the table above. (Use 5% tolerances for each of the

resistors)

5. Answer the following questions:

a. Are the measured values same as calculated values? If not, explain why they are

different?

b. What type of a circuit does Figure 7.36 represent? Provide a practical use of this kind of

Op Amp Circuits.

c. When you interchange the resistor and capacitor, what type of a circuit is obtained?

Provide a practical use of this kind of Op Amp Circuits.

d. Use the results obtained from ‘Vout’ to explain the differences in these two circuits.
