Assignment:

Write a research paper (of 5 pages) on a theatre-related topic of your choosing.

Find out about this person or thing, who he/she is/was, and what connection there is to live theatre. If you pick an actor, you must concentrate on their theatre career for this paper.

Find out what this person thought theatre should be like. Did he/she have a certain philosophy of theatre? If he/she is a playwright, what style of writing and what genre did he/she use most frequently?

List some of this person’s plays. How did the critics respond? Did he/she have any failures or flops? What were their successes. What common themes were explored by this playwright?

This is a report – there is no need to argue a point in this paper, but we do want you to tell us, what you read and explain why this person or theatre group is important to the world of theatre. What impact did this person/group have on the world theatre? Please do not just regurgitate the information you find, come to a conclusion of your own.

Procedure:

1. Submit Topic – DUE by Date On Syllabus. Type out a sentence or two and turn it in by the end of class that day. This is a start to the thesis sentence of your paper.

2. Bibliography/Works Cited and outline – DUE by Date On Syllabus – You must have at LEAST 4 sources – Wikipedia does not count. You may cite Wikipedia, but if you do, you need 4 OTHER sources in addition to it. You may use books, web sites, journal articles, reputable magazines…etc. Format the bibliographic entries for each source in alphabetical order, using MLA guidelines (available online at http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/resdoc5e/).You will also do an outline of your paper, listing the intro, main points and conclusion. This will also be turned in during class.

3. Rough Draft – DUE by Date On Syllabus – write a rough draft of your paper and bring it to class. Include the Bibliography as well, even though you already submitted the bibliography before. Include it AGAIN in this version even if you did not change it. ROUGH DRAFTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IF THEY FAIL TO INCLUDE CITATIONS WITHIN THE TEXT OF THE PAPER. (See bolded section below)

4. Final draft – DUE by Date On Syllabus – the body of your paper should be at least 5 pages, typed, double spaced, with

1 inch margins and page numbers. Include a title page with your name, and the date submitted, following MLA guidelines. The title page does not count as one of the 5 pages. Your paper should have an intro, body and conclusion.

All quotes, whether direct or indirect, should be referenced using parenthetical citations in MLA Format. This website will show you how to properly do this. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747
