MEDIA CONSUMERISM

Introduction

Media is a tool or a collective information outlet used for purposes of communicating, passing information from one person to another.

Examples of these media tools ran by the internet include Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Gmail accounts, snapchat among others.

The 21st century has been the climax of these tools after the invention of the internet which brought about the invention of these tools.

Many teenagers and youths speed increasingly more and more hours on their phones and computer that it becomes a big parental concern.

Problem statement

Why do more and more people get hooked to technological tools and media while the number of dependent users also continue to increase?

Hypothesis

Internet and World wide web are the biggest contributors to large number of social media users

Availability of the tools increase possibilities of its usage and facilitate much more reach

The high affinity for these tools is as a result of influence by peers and time

Literature review

Media has shifted the society’s focus from thriving on competition to the need for collaboration.

The educational systems today are driven by technology which redefines the roles of professors and lecturers to merely facilitators and not teachers or content providers (Olson, et al, 2016)

The internet and World Wide Web have been the major facilitators f large usage of the media

Media technology will continue to evolve focusing strengths on the interface and network.

Todays massive media usage is attributed or supported by the USG theory

Its assumptions:

The usage of the media is goal oriented

The use of a specific medium is dependent on the consumers needs

Each of the available mediums compete to satisfy the consumer base

The value of each media contents lies solely on the consumer

More than 50% of the children use social media by age 10

More than 75% of parents whose children are on social media say that they helped them register on the sites

24% of teens go online constantly, facilitated by the widespread availability of smartphones

Therefore, its safe to assume that these children will continue to use these tools even when adults

Media technology has proven to be a major source of revenue

Internet is nowadays full of information making it a first step in immediate access to information.

Easy availability of internet has made it easy to access information especially education materials

Peer pressure is a major factor to the usage of social media as friends want to interact and have a sense of belonging

Producers of the social media tools give the mass what they need and that’s easy access to information and sense of belonging

Business transactions are more than common nowadays e.g. purchasing online, payment online, enquiries and placing of orders is done online these days.
