Op-ed post assignment
Assignment #5: Op-Ed Post
Many will try to influence the debate about public policy issues by seeking to persuade a broader audience to support their position. A common vehicle for doing so is the “op-ed,” a short article that argues for or against a particular policy. The op-ed is a genre that is “opposite the editorial page” of a newspaper, devoted to opinions and commentary. Your assignment is to write an op-ed (opinion) piece arguing for or against the 1997 Business Roundtable statement that the “paramount duty of management and of boards of directors is to the corporation’s stockholders; the interests of other stakeholders are relevant as a derivative of the duty to stockholders.”
Your approach to this assignment will depend upon your own persuasive voice and organizing logic of your argument. Please conduct some outside research to find a good news site model (e.g., The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times) that works for you. On your assignment, please note which news site you are modeling after.
Audience: Reasonably informed readers who do not know the particular arguments regarding the shareholder versus stakeholder debate.
Purpose: To argue for or against the proposal in a way that is digestible to the given audience. Opinion- based and persuasive rhetoric should be considered and applied.
