Atlas Shrugged Part 3

Writing Assignment

You have now completed a book full of thoughtful ideas and revelations. Among them is the underlying atheistic belief system of the writer (Ayn Rand). Consider the statement:

I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine (Rand 731).

What conclusions can one draw from the above excerpt, except that actions for the benefit of others, the cornerstone of many religions, most specifically Christianity, are in Rand’s world, considered degrading?

However, is the bent towards the absence of religion really in keeping with Rand’s teachings? Is there not room for a religious person to live alongside and agree with much of what Rand believes?

Develop a thesis that addresses the above question in regards to whether or not a religious person really can remain true to God and Ayn Rand’s philosophy. Then, in a 2-3-page essay prove that thesis by using the novel, its events, and characters as support.

Caution: This assignment will require solid knowledge of a particular religion (Christianity recommended (as it is the basis for Rand’s atheism), but not required (any religion focusing on altruism can be used). In order to establish a credible position on the above topic, you must understand exactly what Rand is refuting in her statement and then use the novel as well as a holy book (bible recommended-see above reasoning) to provide evidence in support of your position.

Essay is due no later than November 25, 2016
