Purpose: To apply Newton’s second law for the dynamics of a rigid body to observe the rotational motion of a disk under the action of a known force.
Procedure: A system was set up so that a set of steps, each having a different radius, sat on the top of an arm and a sensor pulley, with a disk screwed to the top. A piece of string was tied and wrapped around the largest step, with a mass hanger tied to the other end. The mass was allowed drop to the floor and the acceleration was recorded. Three trials were observed, with three different masses for each trial. The string was then tied and wrapped around the medium step and the trials were recorded, then around the smallest step.
