two paragraph discussion
Two paragraphs (5-10 sentences each):
Read: Margaret Atwood, “Bluebeard’s Egg” (Norton 156-178)
Paragraph 1: Find a quote in the text that represents Sally's "psychology of abjection" and explain how it represents it. Dig into metaphors, symbols, references to other texts, etc. to help explain the implicit and explicit meanings. Explain what the bigger issue is represented by this quote, and raise a question we should be talking about.
Paragraph 2: Look closely at Maria Tatar's quote and answer the question that follows:
Atwood unsettles the traditional story of ‘Bluebeard’ and challenges us to understand the complexities of what she calls ‘power politics.’…In focalizing the story through Sally and showing how her effort to come to terms with the Grimms’ “Fitcher’s Bird” leads her to powerful revelations about her own life, Atwood suggests that engagement with our cultural stories can open our eyes to realities that—however disruptive, painful and disturbing—are not without a liberating potential. (Norton 144)
Is it important to tell stories that expose the abject realities of the domestic space or the self? Refer to Carter's or Atwood's stories, and Tatar's quote above to explain. End with another question that this discussion inspires.
