Thesis: Child abuse, a major problem in today’s society that is often being overlooked by the legal system. If the one person that is supposed to love and care for you chooses to exhibits abusive behavior than they should be subject to a harsher punishment.

Introduction: “Child Abuse: when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. There are many forms of child maltreatment, including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation and emotional abuse” (Child Help. n.d.).

Child abuse is a serious topic in today’s society. Kids are being abused all over the world by people that are supposed to love them not hurt them. In addition, there is abuse happening all the time by others such as babysitters, foster parents, grandparents, etc. Nine year old Angelica was with a trusted baby sitter when, “Tragically, this ‘trusted friend’ repeatedly raped Angelica over the course of months and threatened her not to tell anyone. Summoning all of her courage..” (Safe Horizon. n.d.).

People should care about child abuse because so many kids are traumatized do to the impact this has on an individual. Kids that have gone through child abuse often exhibit emotional and behavioral problems, like depression, suicidal attempts, struggling with academics, use of alcohol and drugs and they also engage in sexual activity earlier than most.
