Unsolved Crimes – crimes that were never solved; nobody was ever punished for committing these crimes
Why are we interested? – crimes fascinate the public because they want to know the truth about what happened and why
Today – three famous unsolved crimes
1. Jack the Ripper
Whitechapel District – London, England - 1888
Who was Jack the Ripper?
Unidentified serial killer
He murdered at least 5 prostitutes in a poor district in London
Police had several suspects
What did he do?
Jack the ripper cut the throats of his victims
He also cut their bodies
On some victims, he removed their internal organs
The murders were cruel and gruesome
What was the result?
People at the time were very terrified
The murders stopped, but nobody was ever charged or arrested
The story became legendary
There are many stories, books, movies and more about Jack the Ripper
The Zodiac Killings
Northern California – 1960’s-1970’s
Who was the Zodiac Killer?
Serial killer in Northern California
His name comes from several letters he sent to the newspaper
There are seven confirmed victims, and two of these survived
He claimed he killed 37 people
What did he do?
Victims of the Zodiac Killer were either shot or stabbed
The crimes were very brutal
He included cryptograms or puzzles with the letters he sent to newspapers
This is his symbol
What was the result?
The Zodiac Killer was never charged or arrested – the case remains unsolved
Police were not able to decipher all of his cryptograms
He sent many letters to the newspaper and demanded they publish the letters or he would kill more people
The story has inspired many movies, TV shows, books and more
The Black Dahlia
Los Angeles, California - 1947
Who was the Black Dahlia?
Her real name is Elizabeth Short
She was a waitress in California
She was murdered on January 15, 1947
She was given the name Black Dahlia after her murder
What happened?
Elizabeth Short was brutally murdered
Her body was found in a park
Her face and body had been mutilated and her body was cut in half at the waist
She had been missing for a week
What was the result?
This murder has never been solved
Many people came forward to tell stories about Elizabeth Short, but most of them were never proven
Nobody was ever charged or arrested in the case
This story has also become legendary and many TV shows, movies and books have been written about it
Conclusion
There are many unsolved crimes
People continue to be fascinated by these stories
Most of these crimes will probably remain unsolved because they are becoming older all the time
With all the new crime solving technology, maybe we won’t have so many unsolved crimes in the future
