It was a bright blossoming spring day in which the entire Beaver family had gathered around the river bank. Flooding season was approaching and the Beavers needed to build a dam to catch fish . Mother and father Beaver would go to collect the wood that they’d be needing, while the brother and sister Beaver would stack them, and the youngest brother would help everyone fix them into place.

However, the youngest Beaver felt that he could do a better job all on his own. He watched his parents go into the woods. As the children awaited their parent’s return patiently by the river bank, they played with each other.

“What is taking them so long?” Complained the youngest Beaver after a few minutes of waiting. “Where are mother and father?”

“They have gone to gather wood.” His elder brother told him. “Gathering wood takes time. Just wait.”

“Well, I’m tired of waiting!” He exclaimed. “I want to start building the dam!”

“They’ll be back soon.” Comforted his sister with a smile. “Just wait a while longer, and until then, lets play a game!”

Sighing, the beaver awaited his parents return. Once they came with the wood, they placed it down on the bank as the children gathered around them.

“What took you so long?” The younger Beaver questioned.

“Well, we had to find the right wood!” Explained mother.

“It wouldn’t have taken me so long!”

“If you feel like you can do a better job….then try and build the dam yourself!” Father Beaver said angrily.

“Fine! I will!” Retorted younger Beaver. And with that, he ran off into the forest to gather the wood he needed for his dam.

Scurrying around the forest floor, he searched for the right trees but it was a fruitless task. Finally after hours of searching he found the wood he needed. He tied the logs together and pulled and heaved with all the strength in his body. But this also took a lot of time and by the time he reached the banks, he was tired and there were only hours left before the tide struck.

So, having such little time on hands, he started his work with great haste, building from the bottom up. He however, only managed to build the base and………….

CRASH! The current broke the base and his dam toppled.

He now understood why his siblings were needed to build the dam; they ensured the base remained erect while his parents could build upwards. His efforts failed again and again and again! Panic overcame him and realized that he could not do this without the help of his family.

He realized he was arrogant to think that he knew more than the adults and he could do it all by himself. He went to apologize to his parents. His parents understood that he was sorry for his ungrateful behavior. They explained to him that not everything could be achieved alone and forgave him with a pat on the back. The family came together and built the dam just in time for the high tides and everyone was happy.
