SUBJECT: Assignment 4 Instructions

For this assignment, you will write a two-page, direct strategy informational report using memo format.

Who you are: the administrative assistant at Sun to Go, Ltd. (refer to case scenario)

Who your reader is: Mr. Ray Di Micci, your boss

Background: Mr. Di Micci and other mall vendors recently received a letter from Halifax Shopping Centre management asking them to approve a proposal to use facial recognition technology (FRT) in the mall. The letter said that FRT would be used with the security cameras already in place throughout the mall to reduce shoplifting. Mr. Di Micci has read very little about FRT, but he does know that the software can also be used to create profiles on customers and can potentially affect sales as well. Before responding to mall management, he wants to find out more about FRT, specifically how it works, and how is it being used for security as well as marketing purposes. He also wants to know about any legal or privacy issues related to FRT. He has asked you to research and write an informational report.

Your task:

1. Use the library’s databases and online sources to find a minimum of three credible, non-academic sources published within the past five years to gather information for your report. Credible sources include national news media, trade journals and magazines, etc.

2. Write a full two-page (plus reference list), direct strategy informational memo report for Ray Di Micci. After your introduction, logically organize the body of the report to discuss the issues noted above. Conclude your report by summarizing your research and highlighting the most relevant information for your boss.

3. Revise your drafts to ensure your message follows the instructions given here, in your COMM class, and on the checklist.

Referencing your research: Please be sure to correctly acknowledge all your sources using APA style. Examples are shown in the Business Communication textbook and The Style Guide.

Use your own words to express your thoughts and paraphrase the words and ideas of other sources. Do not copy any material from the text book, class slides, other students’ work, or any sources you consult.
