Context -
What is the bioethical issue or decision at hand ? the decision at hand is whether in the pursuit of one child policy, is it right to do away with girl child?
Who must make the decision(s) related to this issue? Those who are supposed to make the decision on the issue is the Chinese government and individual families.
What factual information is relevant to issue and those making decisions? the most important thing to those making the decision is that killing is morally wrong, and doing away with life to suit policy requirements is ethically wrong and therefore should not be condoned.
Stakeholders -
Who are the stakeholders in this situation? Chinese families and Chinese government
What values are apparent for each stakeholder involved? Families prefer male child to females while the government prefer one child per family so as to be in a position to support healthy child upbringing in the nation.
What immediate priorities are apparent for each stakeholder? The immediate priorities apparent to both stakeholders are male child failure to which abortion and female infanticide was practiced.
Alternatives and Tradeoffs
What, if any, are the alternative courses of action in this situation?
Since each party is important in the economy, the government should not encourage the doing away of the girl child; rather it should encourage their upbringing equally in the society as they help to avoid a situation of gender un proportionality in the economy. Furthermore, the issue of one child is tricky especially if in the unfortunate circumstance the child passes away. Therefore, the best course of action would be for the government to source donor funds and enlarge its production scales to support its citizens.
How would each stakeholder be affected by any or all of the alternatives?
When the government sources donor funds and enlarges its production scales, then it would be in a stable position to support its citizens and as such, they would both benefit with increased labor pool and even bioethical treasure.
Solution
What solution(s) would you propose to resolve this issue? With, the one child policy, it is a nice move to curb the exponential population growth. However, the stringent methods adopted such as to do away with the girl child are not safe as they can put the mother to the risk of losing her life in the process of abortion. The best way to do this is to adopt family planning methods that are safe to both couples with no death risk.
How would you convince each stakeholder that this is the best choice?
With the family, since each party is important, it would bring to their knowledge the adverse effects associated with abortion and other means of doing away with pregnancies. However, if they have to keep the number of their family size small, then it is advisable to adopt family planning methods that are safe to both couples and no chances of getting unwanted pregnancies.
On the other hand, I would advise the government how doing away with life would amount to murder and this can put to death both the mother and the child. Since it is not the intention of the government to do away with the mother, then creating awareness on family planning and family planning methods would be paramount hence the unexpected situation of having unexpected babies would not arise.
