Proposing a Solution Essay

As you look around, numerous problems are readily apparent, but for this essay you need to focus not only on a problem but also on a solution that will eliminate or reduce the problem. (This kind of essay is sometimes called a problem-solving essay.) The temptation is to try to solve an overwhelming issue such as pollution, crime, or education. Avoid the temptation by focusing on a narrower discussion: How can AAMU reduce the problem of littering on campus? How can Huntsville reduce the amount of vandalism in the city? How can Madison County deal with overcrowded schools?

Purpose: To persuade your audience to accept and support your solution.

Audience: What are you assuming about your audience? Do they know there is a problem that needs solving? Will they be willing to accept your solution?

Person: Third person is the most formal.

Analysis, Evaluation, and Synthesis:

Once a problem has been selected, you must analyze and evaluate the problem. Use the skills that you developed in writing the previous essays.

The Solution (this will be your thesis): Whichever option you choose, the emphasis must be on solving the problem—the heart of the paper.

· You may identify one solution that will eliminate or alleviate the problem and develop it at length.

· You may identify two or more solutions that are needed and explain each one.

· You may identify two or more possible alternative solutions and explain why one is the best.

The solution(s) that you propose must be feasible—not too fanciful, not too impractical, not too expensive—no pie-in-the-sky solutions. You must justify your solution(s) with specific reasons and evidence; concrete, supporting details and examples are required. Also, consider the possible objections to your solution and address those in the essay. Some points you may have to concede. For example, if you propose that AAMU cafeterias offer more choices at meals, you have to concede that the meals will cost more. However, you could contend that the increased cost is worthwhile because students will be healthier and ultimately pay less in medical costs.

Structure of a proposal:

· Introduction

· Identify and demonstrate that the problem exists

· Solution or solutions; provide clear and supported evidence for your solution

· Answer possible objections (What objections could be made to your proposed solution? Refute. Tell why your solution is the best solution.)

· Conclusion (implementation; call to action)

Alternate structure:

· Introduction

· Identify and demonstrate that the problem exists

· Alternative solution #1; why it’s not satisfactory

· Alternative solution #2; why it’s not satisfactory

· Alternative solution #3; why it’s best

· Conclusion (implementation; call to action)

Optional Use of Sources:

If you use other sources, you must use MLA style for your parenthetical documentation and works cited page. A print-out or copy of print sources should be included with your essay. You can find format guidelines online, in your software, or in the textbook.

You can create your own topic, but here are some possible topics:

1. How can the interaction of AAMU students from different cities, states, and countries be improved?

2. Some AAMU students complain of discrimination. How can discrimination be alleviated on the AAMU campus?

3. Many AAMU students say that they cannot afford their textbooks. What can be done about textbooks for AAMU classes?

4. Some students are unhappy with their roommates. What can be done to improve roommate relationships?

5. How can school spirit be improved on the AAMU campus?

6. How can the financial aid procedures be improved on the AAMU campus?

7. Many AAMU students get sick because they do not live a healthy lifestyle. How can this be changed?

8. AAMU wants to increase enrollment. How can this be accomplished?

9. AAMU wants to decrease the dropout rate. How can this be accomplished?

10. AAMU wants to enroll, retain, and graduate more African-American males. How can this be accomplished?

Remember

· Choose a problem that you can handle; avoid broad topics such as guns or drugs

· Don’t propose a solution that is too expensive or is too impractical

· Refute the objections to your solution(s)
