Abstract
In this experiment a piping and flow process was used to create and friction factor chart and a pump curve. It was conducted by measuring the pressure drop across various fitting such as a contraction, an expansion, bends, valves, and an orifice plate. Aside from expansion, all other fitting cause a pressure drop in the system. In order to optimize the usage of a centrifugal pump, the pressure added to the system should be equal to the head lost by the pipes and their fittings. The flow rate was varied using three different sized rotameters from 0.55 to 26.7 GPM on pipe sizes including ¼ inch PVC, ½ inch PVC, 1 inch PVC, 1 ½ inch PVC, and 1inch stainless steel. The flow rate used during the experiment varied between 1.94 GPM and 27.76 GPM to ensure all areas of flow were measured.
