Background information of the U.S Navy

The United State Navy is a service branch of Armed Forces of United States naval warfare. This navy is one among top uniformed services in the United State. U.S. Navy was established on 13th October 1775 when Second Continental Congress met and passed a resolution to come up with a Continental Navy. The U.S. Navy has very many bases within the United States. It is also the largest and the most capable navy in the universe. This means that it has the highest combination of the battle fleet tonnage (Morris, 2009). Since then, Navy have been in over ten majors battles and wars in their endless efforts to bring peace, democracy, prosperity and security to the people of America. The U.S. Navy also possess the largest aircraft carrier fleet and they are 10 in number. Two of these carrier fleets operates in the reserve fleet. The navy has 329,302 personnel who are actively on duty with 54, 852 of them being officers, 269, 995 of them enlisted and 4,455 as midshipmen. In the ready reserve, the U.S. Navy has a total of 107, 491 personnel with those in the selected reserves as 57, 835 and in the individual ready reserve as 49, 656. In the currently mobilized reserves, it has 2, 841 personnel and in the Navy Department, the U.S. Navy has 209, 671 employees (Morris, 2009).

The U.S Navy was formed during American Revolutionary War and it was thereafter disbanded shortly. The U.S Navy played a significant role in American Civil War. This is by seizing the control of the river and blockading confederacy. The U.S. Navy also did great in World War II i.e. the Japan defeat. In 21st century, the United State. Navy have a record of the sizable presence in this universe, deploying in areas like East Asia, Mediterranean as well as Middle East (Bennett, 2012). United State. Navy is a blue-water navy and it has a capability of projecting force on the regions that are littoral in the universe, respond to the regional crises, engage in the forward regions during the peacetime and actively taking part in the foreign as well as defense policy of the United States. United State. Navy is managed and administered by United State. Department of Navy and it is headed by U.S Navy civilian secretary. The Navy Department is a division of Department of Defense and its head is Secretary of Defense (Bennett, 2012).

The mission statement of the U.S Navy maintains, equipping and training combat-ready naval forces with the capability of winning wars, maintaining seas freedom and deterring aggression. The United States Navy mission is defending and protecting the United States rights and our allies to freely move on oceans and protecting the U.S against her enemies (Bennett, 2012). The U.S. Navy has three major responsibilities:

(i) Preparing the naval forces required for effective war prosecution.

(ii) Developing of aircraft, tactics, weapons, equipment of naval combat, organization, technique and service elements.

(iii) Maintenance of the naval aviation which includes air transport required for naval operations, land-based naval aviation and air techniques and weapons needed in the activities and operation of the Navy (Bennett, 2012).

According to the training manuals of the Navy, its mission is preparing as well as conducting sustained combat operations and supporting national interest. Their functions and operations of the U.S. Navy comprise of power projecting, sea control, nuclear deterrence and sealift duties (Bennett, 2012).

SWOT analysis of the U.S Navy

You can use the U.S. Navy SWOT analysis to assist you in determining the needs of the division. The goal of the SWOT analysis is helping in the identification of the areas in which this division should overcome specific obstacles, requires improvement and has available opportunities. In order to carry out a SWOT analysis, you must take an objective look at the division, this will help you prepare a list the strengths. The strengths are areas in which the U.S Navy does an excellent job (York, 2012). The second thing is preparing a list of the weaknesses of the Navy. These are the areas in which the Navy requires improvements. The third thing is preparing a list of opportunities. These are areas that could assist the Navy division such as maintenance availabilities, unfilled school quotas and so on. Lastly, prepare a list of threats. These may be upcoming personnel losses, inspections and so on. Let’s us now look at the SWOT analysis of the U.S Navy (Bennett, 2012).
