Individual Wilderness Activity

Without your group, you will survey and assess a wilderness area in the United States other than

Yellowstone (because Callicott discussed Yellowstone at length) to answer the following questions.

result in a failed assignment; if you paraphrase or quote sources, cite them appropriately:

1. Research your wilderness area—if it is managed by a state or federal agency, then it has an

official website with information. Is your chosen wilderness area an exemplar of Stegner’s

imaginary of wilderness areas? Why, or why not?

2. Using Google Maps and/or other resources, research your wilderness area’s surroundings. Are

there human infringements into its buffer zone like those noted by Callicott (see Callicott, 180-

186)? What kind of infringements do you see? How do they infringe on the buffer zone and/or

the wilderness area?

3. Research the wilderness area’s local flora, fauna, and ecosystem (that state/federal webpage

might be handy, here). Imagine and describe how each type of infringement listed in 2. might

impact the wilderness area’s local flora, fauna, and ecosystem. Five or more explained examples

will suffice.

4. How do you think Callicott would seek to solve these infringements? How would you solve

them? Are they even a problem that needs solving?
