Q: This week we will cover the chapter on Listening. There are 3 different types of listening, which were informational listening, critical listening and empathic listening. This week, I would like for you to choose 2 of these 3 and briefly discuss 1). what they mean 2) how they apply to you in your communication life and 3) why they are so important to communication.

As always, please your initial response should be at least 100 words, with 3 responses being 50 words each.

Classmate #1: Mary Cooper

The three different types of listening are informational listening, critical listening and empathetic listening. Two types of listening I think are important are informational and empathetic listening. Informational listening is listening to learn information. Empathetic listening is listening and trying to understand on an emotional level. They apply to me because every day in school when I go to to class I try to use informational listening. I want to learn the information the teacher is teaching to the class. I  use empathetic listening with my friends. When they have had a bad day I try to understand where they are coming from and try to make them feel better. They are so important in communication because if someone comes to you happy or sad or with an emotion you need to be able to listen to it and have the proper response. Informational learning is important because when listening you need to be able to understand the information given.

Classmate #2: Drew Carnahan

Informational Listening is listening to learn. Empathic Listening occurs when you are trying to identify with the speaker by understanding and experiencing what he or she is thinking or feeling. Informational Listening applies to peoples’ communication lives because people listen to learn things every day. It’s important when listening to learn life lessons and when listening in classes to prepare for degrees and future careers. Empathic Listening applies to peoples’ communication lives because people are frequently in need of others for comfort and understanding. Some things that come up in life are hard to deal with alone so it’s important for people to be empathic listeners when friends or family are in need of you.

Classmate #3: Ashlynn Davis

There are three types of listening. Two that I think are important to communication are Informational listening and Critical listening. Informational listening is when you listen to learn. Informational listening is listening effectively to learn something from the speaker as you would in school. Critical listening is when you listen to evaluate or analyze. Critical Listening does not mean you are listening to criticize, but instead you are analyzing and evaluating what the speaker is saying.

Informational listening is important to communication because it is how we learn something new. Critical listening is important to communication because we take what the speaker says and evaluate it. Having this type of listening skill makes you a better listener.
