This lesson is intended for nursing students in a web-enhanced on-site environment. Nursing students will be required to watch this video before attending an on-site lab simulation.

Lesson Goal: Upon viewing this video, students will be prepared to engage in a mental health nursing simulation.

Description of Lesson/ Learning- centered activity:

This role-play lesson will depict an interaction between a young patient and a nurse. Through the role-play and instructional dialogue, students will be introduced to priority concerns of nurses caring for victims of abuse.

ASSURE Model Analyze Learners

Intended Audience of learners: Nursing students in an undergraduate, pre-licensure nursing program Prerequisite skills or knowledge needed: Basic growth and development, some background on child abuse and general mental health nursing Learner Motivation: Nursing students will be motivated to watch this demonstration because it will help prepare them for a high-level simulation activity. Students will take notes and complete a list of priority concerns to help them successfully engage in the upcoming simulation. As identifying child abuse can be complex, nursing students will also be interested in how to carefully and ethically address this type of situation.

Rationale: Rationale: Rationale: In an abuse situation, we need to ensure that we put the patient’s needs at the center of the discussion. This requires focus on the evidence base to ensure we have all resources available to the client.

Careful use of assessment, planning, analysis, implementation, and evaluation are required for the nurse to best care for a client in an abuse situation. Caring is essential in that the tone and attitude of the nurse can greatly impact the outcomes for the patient.

We want students to see that they have to use varied sources to ensure that they have a complete picture of the patient’s needs. Working with a patient in a crisis situation requires skill in prioritization and the nurse must be able to teach to effectively get the message to the client.
