Discussion due tonight help
The expectancy-value and growth-mindset theories you learned about this week speak to underlying causes of high and low levels of motivation. Consider your own experiences. You have likely experienced a situation in which you believed in your capabilities, held high expectations for yourself, placed high value on the task at hand, and had the willingness to put forth considerable effort and persist through obstacles and setbacks. What results did you achieve in this situation? On the flip side, recall a time when you held low expectations for yourself, perceived yourself as being less than capable, and held the belief that the task at hand held little value. Compare the results of the two situations.
Next, reflect on the Dweck video, and consider whether you hold a growth mindset or fixed mindset. Bring to mind learners you have observed who have a fixed mindset, and think about how this fixed mindset affected his or her expectations, values, and motivation to learn and achieve.
By Wednesday:
Post a summary of the two situations you recalled in terms of expectancy-value, including a comparison of the results achieved. Then, describe a learner you know or have observed who demonstrates a fixed mindset, and explain how this mindset has affected his or her motivation.
Read a selection of your colleagues' postings. As you read their responses, note those to which you would like to respond with advice, questions, comments, and/or encouragement.
