Development skills
Over this semester I have taken my time to carry out self-assessments, and surprisingly I have already done ten of them. The assessments done were to measure and review my level of interpersonal skills and then provide feedback on areas and things to be done to improve the skills. Using five of the assessments, I have decided to choose one area within each of the five assessments. The areas will be paramount as I will focus on them in order to improve my interpersonal skills. For each area of focus, there is a thorough plan of what is to be done, when is to be done, and the measurement of what will be done. Stress at work, flexibility, creative potential, listening skills and communication under stress are the areas that will be developed. The goals of developing the above five areas are to reduce my chances of being stressed as well as reducing the overall levels of stress.
Stress at work
The reason as to why I selected this kind of assessment is because most individuals do less to reduce stress. For example, it is common to find that an individual realizes that his or her lifestyle is affecting his or her well-being after seeing the physical symptoms. Personally, I do not want to be an individual who is going to be sick because of leaving the stress levels unchecked. Therefore, I feel that the job and home are the places that I should start with as they are the areas where a lot of time is spent. In my action plan, the first step that is to be taken is to read a book by the name " The Truth About Stress: Understanding Your Life From The Inside and Out by Richard Flint." In my plans, the book will be finished in a timeline of two to three weeks as this will help me to study the ideas presented in the book, document what is necessary and put into place mechanisms to use the instructions that are provided in the book once I go to work next year. In my action plan, the next step is to talk to my colleagues so that they can let me know whether they have noted any behavior change and change of moods from me. To get colleagues opinions, I will use the email and text messages so that their work schedules are not interfered with. It will be quite great if all the colleagues provide timely feedback and I will also request for such responses. The third step in my action plan will be taking regular breaks. To enhance this at the workplace, I will talk to the managers and request them for a few breaks so that I can be able to clear my head or have time to relax even at my desk.
Flexibility
The choice of this assessment was due to the fact my score of 128 indicated that I usually experience some considerable levels of stress when my expectations are unmet. Personally, I want to be able to accept it, control it, and make decisions on how to cope with it or change ways on how to deal with unmet expectations. The first step in my action plan is to make some changes in my routine, and this will require that I change my calendar in that tasks that need to be done step by step be completed in different days. At the start of the week, I will ensure that I check on the things that need to be done and the times when they need to be done. When the week is over, I will be able to check if the calendar was followed without becoming stressed. My second step is ensuring that I take risks an if I fail to hit a 100% success I am satisfied and not becoming stressed. I will always learn to give myself reminders on the need to try new things. I will stay relaxed and have the mindset that life is not all about being perfect. On each day, i will be able to evaluate myself to check if I did my duties. My third step for the flexibility action plan is to ensure that focus is on the future and not the past. I will tell myself that the future is important and thus I will use my experience as a learning mechanism which will better myself instead of regretting over my past failures. To enhance the focus in the future, I will prepare a journal and jot down the times that I might think about the past.
Listening Skills
I chose the listening skills assessment because each can always improve his or her listening and the communication skills. It is important that one continues to improve his or her communication skills even if people say that he or she is outstanding. The first step I will take in my action plan for listening is to read on the ways on how I can improve my listing skills and then implement what I learn and this will probably improve my skills. To ensure that I have improved my skills I will have to talk to the colleagues at work so that they can tell me any change observed. The second step is to tell my coworkers to review my skills given that I have taken actions that are aimed at improving myself. The last step at this level is listening what others have to say, and this is in line with having two ears for listening. Other people may have better opinions than my own.
Communication under stress
The reason as to why I chose this assessment is because it is related to listening skills. When I am stressed communication and conversation with others are likely to be disrupted, and this leads to the disruption of conversations which is not good. Stress takes away my mind and thus communication and focus are likely to be lost with stressful situations. The first step at this level is to read a book on meditation and how to stay focused during communication. With such tips, I will be able to stay tuned with the person I am communicating with, and this emotions and judgments will be kept at par. The other step is to have a scenario whereby an individual will stress me out and then have me do something when I am stressed and then see my response. The exercise will continue until I am able to have a conversation under a stressful situation and a scenario where I am not stressed. The third step is to follow the steps of dialogue that are provided in the book. With the use of the steps, conversations are likely to be improved.
