Abstract

In today's world as technology is growing people are looking to adopt new technologies which offer them a feasible and easy access to the resources with a security that makes them away from common threats. This paper introduces the introduction to the internet protocols and concept of the IPV4 and IPV6, as well what are the disadvantages in the IPV4 and the advantages in IPV6. This paper describes the future concepts of the IPV6 and the future impact of the IPV6 on the network field by describing a brief history of the internet protocols and the statistical representation of the IPV6 users.

Introduction

Transport layer is the basic layer in the OSI and the TCP/IP model. The basic task of this layer is to send or receive the data or voice and video data grams or packets over the internet. IPV 4 is meant for Internet Protocol version 4. The network protocol that has been used in the Internet since its inception is IPv4 , which provides 2^32 distinct addresses. Its successor IPv6(Internet Protocol Version 6) provides 2^128 addresses, but IPv6 adoption has not proceeded as quickly as its designers expected (Erik Kline,2011). The main need for the migration to IPV6 from IPV4 is mainly for the ip addresses . IPv4 provides approximately 4.3 billion of ip addresses but there is a need for more ip addresses. For that reason they introduced IPV6.

History

The current trend of the Internet Protocol IPv4 was initially grown in the 1970s, and the primary convention standard RFC 791 that administers IPv4 usefulness was distributed in 1981. With the remarkable extension of Internet use - particularly by highly populated nations like India and China. The approaching deficiency of location space (accessibility) was perceived by 1992 as a genuine restricting component to the proceeded with utilization of the Internet run on IPv4 (ipv6.com,2008). The below table depicts measurement demonstrating how rapidly the location space has been getting ceased throughout the years after 1981.

Need for IPV6 and Disadvantages of IPV4

The development of web with its requirement for more addresses is a primary variable driving the requirement for another variant of the Internet. Presently there are evaluated to be more than 100 million PCs associated with the Internet. In the future, the quantity of gadgets associated with Internet is going to increase at a more prominent rate. A large number of the gadgets, for example, telephones, cars will oblige system network. This represent the interest for more IP locations. To overcome diverse issues identified with the Internet, it was proposed the need to move from variant 4 to form 6 of the Internet Protocol. In IPV4 the address is made up of 32 bits with a 4 bytes of 8 bits each. ie; xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx. Ipv4 uses the binary format(ie,1's and 0's)to represent the ip address The address space for the IPV6 are of 128 bits. IPV6 uses the Hexadecimal format to display the ip address of 128 bits. For example 2001.1396.2546.acdf.a039.decb.0001.1008 whereas, "a to f" are ranging from "10 to 15" in value. Some of the disadvantages in the IPV4 are Insufficient IP address space, Address prefix allocation , Data security (Ali, Volume 2, Issue 12, December 2012).

Advantages of IPV6

IPv6 is an advanced version to the Internet Protocol version 4 by eliminating the demerits over in it. Some of them are listed below(routing and bridging guide, cisco.com).

1) Large Address Spaces: IPV6 provides large number of ip addresses when compared to the previous version of internet protocol version4. ipv6 has 128 bits where as ipv4 have 32 only.

2) Larger payload for expanded throughput and transport proficiency

3)Hierarchical system structural planning for steering proficiency

4)Support for generally conveyed steering conventions (OSPF, BGP, and so on.)

5) Built in Security by providing interoperability in between the systems.

6)Elimination of requirement for system address interpretation (NAT) and application layered entryway (ALG)

Statistics

Ipv6 is the future for the internet and it still in developing process so many companies are doing research on the IPV6. Mainly the IPV6 for more IP addresses and for security than the IPv4. But, as concerned to small scale industries there is not sufficient information is available on the internet about the adoption and the operability of the IPv6 . So , the companies or the employee still getting the problems when they are migrating to the IPV6 than the IPv4 and this is one of the reason that they are still using the IPV4 technology with the combination of the NAT( network address translation) as shown in the below figure. From the diagram shown I came to know that half of the people are still using IPV4.

According to the NIST, time and cost effects are a little bit more when compared to the IPv4. When IPv4 is created, there is no other version compatible with it, making it the dynamic one. But, in case of IPv6, IPv4 is compatible with it in many cases. As the years passed, there also increases in the expenditure to switch towards the IPv6.

Conclusion

From all the points and facts that we are discussed above, I came to know that in today's world people are addicted to the internet of course we need to. So at this stage if there is a problem with the ip address then nobody get connected to the internet. At this point of stage we need to adopt a new technology ie;IPV6 which provides more IP address with a strong set of security. In this technical era IPV6 is a strong tool for the future. For now there are some disagreements but not yet proven. I believe in this technical world the IPV6 is going to create sensations in the field of networking and IPV6 worth the effort.
