Mentor Parent Program

Summary

The parent mentor program was developed in 1990.

It is a community-based program that targets parents.

Goal

The goal of the program is to enable parents of children with disabilities to fully participate with professionals.

The aim is early intervention as well as meeting transitional and educational needs of their parents.

Casondra:

The poverty levels in the area were rising at a very alarming rate which provided the idea of the development of a program that would likely establish a common ground to all other developed regions within the United States.

Therefore under these circumstances the need for access to information, advocacy and training were great since the society was ready, but they lacked the champion who would create a better environment for this development. Therefore the Mentor Parent Program was formed to address the increasing need for transformation by the society.

The program maintains a steady relationship with other parent organizations who share the same ideology with the mentor parent program. The association with other organizations has brought an immense success to the program since there are sufficient ideas that can be implemented in the process.

Community organizations work closely with schools to help get about 10 parents to assist the teachers 2 hours out of the day

This is when the parents are then assigned to a classroom but not their own children's classroom

Given the proper training by the teachers they will break in to groups with the children so that they can possibly learn better.

By carrying out high quality education programs this will help the children get the learning that they need by preparing them for further schooling as well as giving them the tools for future employment.

Also to give activities for kids coming from correctional facilities and finding out what they excel in to help them better themselves, and provide programs for at-risk-youth.
