ABUSE OF POWER 4

Abuse of Power

I. The Problem

Officials in the corrections departments of America possess great power and authority over inmates in the individual systems. The problem is that these officials use that power to abuse the inmates and do so in order to benefit themselves. Many of the corrections officers are predators, and unfortunately, the prison population is who they target.

II. Factors Bearing on the Problem

Abuse of Power is something that exists in our criminal justice system. Corrections officers have a challenging responsibility when dealing with those individuals who are incarcerated. Many correctional officers have abused their power in some way. There is a plethora of factors that lead to the abuse of power. The most destructive of those are:

· Inadequate training for officers poses a problem where abuse of power is concerned. Without the basic knowledge and skills can be difficult in fulfilling the necessary duties required for a correctional officer. Inadequate supervision exacerbates the potential for error which ultimately affects the overall performance of the officer. Supervision is necessary to ensure that employees are performing their duties as expected and required.

Other areas that are factored into the hiring process is the physical agility test to measure if the candidate is physically suited to perform the job. These tests entail a series of activities involving physical activities (White, 2016). In this process an interview in conducted in which the applicant, along with the hiring officer and or those who are instrumental in the hiring decision ask a series of questions regarding
