Home Office Remodeling Assignment Building a Home Office

Selected Learning Outcomes for Unit 2: Upon completion students will be able to: o Estimate &calculate area, perimeter, and volume for regular/irregular shapes in applied problems. o Convert units of measurement using dimensional analysis for various systems of measurement.

Introduction: Making the most of the floor space in your home is a great idea when you have a need and some space that can repurposed. Do-It-Yourself projects can be a way to save money. You currently need a home office and you have an under-utilized sun room. That sun room is the solution you need to convert the sun room into a home office. The sun room is a great solution since it has floor, ceiling, walls, and windows already. All you need to do is a bit of renovation and you decide that you can do most of the work yourself (perhaps with the help of a few friends). To complete this Do-It-Yourself project, you will do four (4) things:

1) Install new flooring 2) Install baseboard 3) Install air conditioning/heating 4) Install a flower bed outside the office

Directions: For each of the items related to the conversion of the sun room to home office:

• Show the work done to get your final answer. If there is no work, there will be no credit given. • Work must be neat, complete, organized and correct to receive full credit. Round all final

answers to the nearest tenth of a unit unless directions/information provided for an item require another form. Final answers should include appropriate units.

• This is a group lab and when you sign the submitted lab, you are agreeing that the work is complete and correct. All members of the group will receive the same grade.

1. Determine the cost of flooring the home office with carpet tiles, ceramic tile, and laminate flooring. (Just flooring – not labor, tools, equipment, etc). Show all calculations. Include units with final answers in space provided.

Carpet Price : $46.44 per box of 16 carpet tiles. Sold by the box only.

Ceramic Tile: $2.98 for each individual tile. Sold by the individual tile.

LaminateFlooring: $34.88 for a box that covers 17.5 square feet. Sold by the box only.

2. Now that the flooring is installed, it is time to put in the baseboards. Note that baseboard must be purchased in whole strips. You may not purchase any fractional part of a strip. For this assignment, you may ignore the width of any doors when calculating the amount of baseboard needed.

4. The interior work done and now you will plant a butterfly garden. You select Black-eyed Susans, Bee Balm, Russian Sage, and Chrysanthemums to plant in your garden to provide a variety of color, height, and texture to attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. a) You will plant enough flowers to fill the bed. How many plants will you need to purchase if

each plant requires 2.25 square feet of space when fully grown? (10 points)

b) As a last touch, once the flowers are planted, you will fill the bed with mulch to a depth of 6 inches. Mulch is sold in bags holding 2 cubic feet for $3.33. How much mulch will you need to purchase, rounded to the nearest whole cubic foot? What is the cost of the mulch? (8 points)
