What was your initial response to the sources you read for your paper? Include in-text citations and full reference entries in APA format to all sources you will be using for your Final Research Paper.

When I first read the sources for my paper, my initial response was that the articles are very biased when it comes to gender. I thought that the articles are biased towards the female children of the society. For instance, the first article about gender and leadership, I thought that there is less attention that is being given to the female gender in America when it comes to education (Collard & Reynolds, 2005). There is no gender equity in most of the systems. In the second article, I thought that girls, especially in the rural areas are being biased by the media.

Can you identify any biases that you might have about the cultural practices you will discuss in either Part I or Part II of your Final Research Paper?

Whenever you read an article, there are those biases that one is prone to have regarding their cultural practices. I can identify biases about the girl children that I could have about the cultural practices I will be discussing in my final paper. The society where we have been brought up in believes that men should be superior to women. The woman’s place is thought to be in the house. This is evident by the domination of males that exists in many leadership positions. The few women who are in leadership also face a lot of opposition. This makes me have a bias on women in leadership as I have grown up knowing these positions should be held by men.

Identify any problems you might be having in examining your own culture from an etic perspective or the other culture from an emic perspective.

When studying my culture from an etic viewpoint, I might face a lot of problems since this would compel me to criticize the culture without any bias towards it. One of the problems I might face would be the problem of classifying some practices as bad practices bearing in mind it is my very own culture that I practice. When examining the culture of others from an emic perspective, one problem that I might face is analyzing their culture according to how I categorize and perceive their world and the meaning I have for their culture. This might be insulting toward them and their way of life.

Review Miner’s article Body Ritual Among the Nacirema, https://msu.edu/~jdowell/miner.html and explain how his discussion of Americans (also known as Nacirema) will help you take an outsider’s perspective on your own culture.

The discussion of the Nacirema in this article will help me take on an outsider perspective of my culture by first of all changing my mindset that the way I view my culture is not the way other people perceive it. This discussion will also help me be able to examine how others view my culture through research.
