I chose the Controlled Substance Act, it was an act meant to elaborate on the previous laws put in place for substance abuse, but President Nixon wanted to come up with an Act that would elaborate not only on substance abuse, but ways to prevent it, smuggling laws, distribution and selling of substances for health related needs, and law enforcement policies. The threat started early but only got worse towards the 1960’s and from there just grew. I think initially the law was put into place because of the high use of Marijuana, Acids and Opioids. From there the real worry at the time when the Act came about in the late 1960’s was the use of heroin, that continued to grow through the Vietnam war especially with people suffering with PTSD or even teenagers who wanted to try it. Marijuana is a gateway drug but can lead to crazier things such as Heroin which is a very addictive drug. This Act also elaborates on federal programs that are there to help those trying to stop substance abuse, such as, Narcotics Anonymous and Alanon for their families. With today’s society the law is more important now than ever, with drug cartels and people trying to smuggle marijuana and cocaine through the borders, we need these laws and policies put into place to handle and maintain our law enforcements measures to find and arrest people related to these crimes. Drug addiction is high, in some states more than others but we really need to take a focus on our youth because it is hitting them and more youths are saying that they have tried marijuana or have used cocaine to lose a little weight. The prevention part of this Act is almost just as important as the laws set forth to attain people who are illegally distributing these drugs.
