..it is the universal corruption and profligacy of the times, which
taking its rise amongst the rich and luxurious has now extended its baneful influence and spread its destructive poison through the whole body. When the mass of blood is corrupted,
there is no remedy but amputation.

Major Paper I
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
PAPER 1 is to be an analysis of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s materials focusing on how he used those materials in scholarly ways to make his point or points. Solzhenitsyn was a well-respected author and Nobel Prize winner, who wrote the book, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich to examine the nature of the choices all humans must make in his opinion to eschew evil and subsume that which is ‘good’ into their souls by fighting against evil practices in the culture in which they find themselves. Solzhenitsyn’s book may well be interesting in its subjects, but for your first major paper you are to include an analysis of his use of materials. Solzhenitsyn is a person who experienced an abusive culture first hand, and thus his collection of materials has a certain ethos proof, allowing us to learn about the use of these materials to analyze what he wishes to show as compatible with reality; thus, what could be called ‘good; ’ moreover, Solzhenitsyn claims to have gained knowledge through his suffering. However, remember Solzhenitsyn and Ivan Denisovich are NOT synonymous.
For this assignment, write an essay; in which you investigate the question of what moves does Ivan make that might be compatible with reality or truth and thus, what might be ‘good’ by describing and evaluating the range of materials that Solzhenitsyn uses to investigate that question which you choose to focus on. You might begin by making a list of Solzhenitsyn ’s materials and try to categorize what you find. Work from there to figure out what do these materials allow the author to do: for example, what is the author able to say because of using a particular story or quotation? That is, what relationships do you see between the type of material and Solzhenitsyn’s various topic sentences and the specific point he is using that material to make.
Your paper should be grounded in specific examples from Solzhenitsyn’s novel. That is you should choose specific examples from his text to examine in your paper. Furthermore, you should make clear to your readers what you want to use those examples to say. You, of course, will have to define “good” both denotatively and connotatively near the beginning of your paper.
The paper should be at least five pages long. You must choose MLA format. Provide internal citations and prepare a Works Cited Page.
