HW #2: Descriptive Stats, Z, CI Name____________________________________________
This Week’s Homework assignment is divided into 2 sections. The first section addresses the use of SPSS to generate descriptive statistics. The second part addresses the use of the Z-score and the calculation of confidence intervals. Please read all directions carefully. Please show all work in the hand calculations required in Section 2. Please present all typewritten answers in a font color that is not black.
Section 1: Use of SPSS
The first thing that you will do is to use SPSS to generate Frequency Tables using a given set of data. Follow the directions provided in the SPSS directions file found in Week by Week 2. The data file that you will use for this portion of the HW assignment is the same one that you created last week for HW assignment #1. This SPSS data file is found in this week’s Week by Week folder. Open this data file by clicking on the file: Data Set for SPSS Instructions for Descriptive Statistics and HW#2. Please note that SPSS will automatically open along with the data set. Once you complete the SPSS portion and generate the output tables, you will complete the following:
Copy and Paste the SPSS output Tables into this document at the specified locations. The way to successfully copy and paste from SPSS output into a word document can be accomplished as follows:
How to Copy and Paste into a Word document from SPSS:
1. Open up a blank Word Document.
2. Go to the SPSS Output and place the curser over the Table that you want to copy and paste.
A yellow box will appear around the Table.
3. Right Click on the Table.
4. Select “Copy Special”
5. Check the box beside Image (JPG)
6. You can leave the other boxes checked or you can uncheck all. The most important point of this process is to obtain the paste option for photos.
7. Check the box beside Save as default
8. Click OK
9. Move the curser to the new Word Document and right click the curser
10. Select and click on the Paste option with the Clip board and paint brush. It indicates to “Keep Source formatting”. (Sometimes you will see a clipboard with a picture on it and if present click this one.)
11. The table will appear in the word document and look like the one in the SPSS Output.
12. If the table is too big and falls off the edge, find the square edge marker on the lower right side of the table box, place your curser on the little box and move it into the right side margin of the page.
Complete the following:
SPSS directions Step 1: Frequencies
Follow the directions from 1. Frequencies in the SPSS Directions file.
Copy and paste the SPSS output tables into this document at this location.
Answer the following questions.
A. Look at the Frequency Table generated by SPSS
1. Identify the Mode for each of the variables.
2. Describe the distributions for each variable in terms of the mode.
SPSS directions Step 2: Descriptive Statistics
Next, using the same data set, use SPSS to generate Descriptive Tables using the same set of data as above. Follow the directions provided in the SPSS directions file. There are two methods described that are used to obtain descriptive tables. Run both methods.
Copy and Paste the SPSS output Tables (“Statistics” from Method 1 and “Descriptive Statistics” from Method 2) into this document at this location.
Answer the following questions:
B. Using these tables:
a. Compare and contrast these two tables.
b. Which Table view (Method) do you prefer? Why? (There is no correct
answer for this one)
c. The Standard Deviation was calculated for test scores for each week (Look
in the Tables). Calculate the Variances from these values. Show your work .
Section 2: Use of the Z-score and calculation of Confidence Intervals.
You can show your work in one of two ways:
1. Print the HW document that has been completed thus far. Write your calculation work by hand onto the document. Circle the correct answer for each question. Save the document as a pdf and upload the file into the Blackboard assignment slot. Or
2. Type all of your work, present the final answer in a font color that is NOT black. Save the HW file as a document in Word and upload the file into the Blackboard assignment slot.
The following questions (Tasks) do not require a computer and SPSS. You may use SPSS to calculate the answers if you choose for Tasks 6 and 8 on page 39 and Task 13 on page 88. Should you choose to use SPSS, the variable label must include your name. For example: The variable name I would use for Task 6 is “MonicaCongratsDay”. Additionally, you must copy and paste the appropriate tables into your homework Word document and then highlight the information that the question asks for. Do NOT give me only the table with no markings of the correct answer. For Tasks 10 and 11 on page 87 you must calculate the 95% CI for all tasks where it is indicated. This must be done by hand showing all work. Recall that the z-score for a 90% CI is 1.645, for a 95% CI is 1.96, and the z-score for a 99%CI is 2.575. These questions are from the physical copy of the Field Textbook. You will have trouble with this if you have the electronic copy. If you have the electronic copy of the textbook you will need to find a fellow student who has the physical copy of the textbook in order to obtain the correct pages and tasks.
