Be sure to read the APA Publication Manual, Chapter 1 (pages 9 – 20), for a general view of writing
issues, including types of papers and ethical considerations of personal and property rights.
Content, Organization, Writing
A manuscript is divided into distinct parts. A sample is included as an additional attachment to this
assignment. Content, organization and examples are also discussed in the APA Publication Manual
(6th edition), Chapter 2 (pages 21-59).
Writing style, grammar, and gender bias are discussed in Chapter 3 (pages 61-86) of the Manual.
Details of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, use of italics, abbreviations, etc., are
discussed in Chapter 4 (pages 87-124) of the Manual.
Quotations
A particularly troublesome area seems to be quotations. Other areas for which you should refer to the
manual are numeration, metrication, statistical and mathematical copy, tables, figures, and
Appendices. References to citations are relatively simple, but also seem to be a problem area.
Finally, proofreading, while tedious, is necessary. The lack of careful proofreading and correction of
errors is painfully obvious to the instructor. Failure to use a spell check is inexcusable.

Title Page: Formatted correctly
Overall format of paper: APA style, appropriate sections and titles
Abstract: Concise summary explaining the statement of the problem
Body: Good introduction, informative, and flows well
Summary (conclusion): Clear and concise, ties everything together, implications for further research
Paper citations: Appropriate citations within the body of the paper (APA style)
Grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Length: 6 - 12 pages (can be longer)
Level of information: Appropriate level for topic
